Muumm SIDC FAQ states 205/45R17 as correct fitment.
205/50R16 - Dynamic circ. = 1.9478m - Baseline
205/45R17 - Dynamic circ. = 1.9604m - +0.6%
215/45R17 - " = 1.9918m - +2.3%
215/40R17 - " = 1.9164m - -1.6%
So the 215/45R17 are not miles away from ideal diameter wise.
Higher profile 45 tyre would be less `direct` (potentially) than the 40 profile tyre BUT the 45 profile is reinforced and may therefore not degrade `directness`????????

This is not the thread I was looking for as somebody else had reported a splitting of the tyre sidewall running round the circumference and I cannot find that post.
Anyway as a result of another post I went to find the load rating on the Goodyear F1 Eagle GSD3 215 40 ZR 17 which are off the car at present. The rating was 487kg but I noticed that where it said "Tread Wear280" there was a split of 1" and 2" respectively on the two front tyres. These tyres may have done 6000mls approx and had never been on the car or track or Elvington.
They were returned to Motorway Tyres, Darlington 10-10-03 and after some chasing I had a phone call from Goodyear Technical, Tyre Fort, Birmingham, late Friday afternoon,24-10-03.
Basically, I have been given a 40% credit on each tyre, a long explanation as to the cause of the splits was given but it meant little to me, it was not considered they were dangerous as it was a separation of the outer rubber surface and not the casing. The load rating of the tyres was suitable for use on a Subaru STi (ZR rating). I specifically asked if there had been similar failures on other F1`s and was told the failure rate was very low in comparison to other Goodyear tyres of different manufacturing process.
I was disappointed at only a 40% allowance because these tyres wear far faster than the SO2s which did nearly 17,000 miles on the set but they are the best wet tyres I have used so far so I ordered another two tyres to be fitted this week coming and I will put the existing 2 part worn tyres on the front to see if they split, in which case I will report back. I will also log the mileage.
Obviously I would not order more of the same if I was unhappy with them and their good wet performance out weighs the fairly rapid wear rate and I am told they do have supple (read soft to you and me) tyre walls to endow good road holding.
On a seperate subject has anybody heard that Kumo are to manufacture F1 tyres?
