ABS question.

I have no idea how ABS works so this may be a dumb question.
My ABS warning light came on the other night, hasn't since though.
Would a failure of ABS adversely affect normal braking operations?
I have a feeling I'm having to press the brake pedal harder but it could all be in the mind of course.
Also does the appearance of the warning light mean ABS has failed?
Oh, and while I think about it I've never managed to activate the ABS even under extreme (panic) late breaking or in the snow last year when everyone was complaining about ABS.

I'm no expert..
On other cars I've had even if the abs failed the brake system worked OK. I would imagine this to be the case on all cars from a safety perspective.
I would check the fluid levels and if all seems OK there I'd get it into a garage.. brakes are something you need to be sure of!

I'd definitely get it checked out. If you have never managed to trigger the ABS it is either not working or you are a wuss driver .
My ABS regularly used to cut in if I was braking over bumps/manhole covers etc. Have you checked the fuse?
