18" Wheel weight compared with stock...
#1
I am going to upgrade my 17" MY03 WRX wheels with OZ SuperL" Golds 18" (with 225/40/18 GSD3 Goodyears) that are according to OZ 8,3Kgs only, one of the lightest wheels all around.
How are they compared with the stock rims, I have heard that the factory weights only 17lb(7,7Kgs) per wheel is this true?
Actually I'd like the new wheels + tires to be lighter than the previous in total weight or am I overoptimist?

Jim,
I'd be surprised if the standard wheels were anywhere near as light! IIRC, someone measured the standard STi 7/8 wheels and they come in just shy of 20kgs!!

Doubtfull! Perhaps that is supposed to be 16.5kgs? OE wheels are usually cheap (read heavy) as are many of the parts on the car (like the brakes for example).
You could always take one off and weigh it?

Muttant Matt,
lol! I got 18's on my STi8 the other week. I got home and carried the OEM wheels to the garage. Fuc$ing hell I thought they were heavy but you've explained it saying they are circa 20kg.
I lift weights and my gut feeling was they must be around 20kg but thought that was surely too heavy for a wheel.
Damian.

Jim, I seem to remember my OE my02 wheel / tyre combo weighed something like 49lbs or just over 22Kg. shouldn't think the my03 is much different...
I was surprised as the turini wheels I replaced them with were the same weight (with F1 GSD3s on)

Just for information, I weighed both sets of wheels on my STi;
Standard 17" STi alloy + Bridgstone 225/45 = 22.3kg x4= 89.2
Speedline Turini 18" alloy + Toyo 225/40 = 19.4kg x4= 77.6
Weight saved = 11.6Kg

Just for the record tires are quite importants in overall wheels weight and some Uniroyals are almost 2kg lighters per wheel from S03s and GSD3s.
I found also that same size wheels are completely differents in tread width, for example in 225/45/17 dimension S03 have 8,4" tread width while F1 GSD3 have only 7,1" (!!!), so contact patch is obviously less.
