Question

I run the car on 18" alloys and want to fit winter tyres to a set of standard 17" alloys. The car will only be used with the winter tyres in winter conditions, hence why I say I want real aggressive tyres. I don’t need these things to perform on wet and dry roads at high speeds or anything like that. I need them to get the wife and kids safely up steep roads to and from School when it is the middle of winter, when the little A-Class Merc c/w 17" AMG alloys won’t quite make it. (And I don't want to buy a 4x4 jeep)

I know Pirelli do a Winter 210 snowsport in a size that will fit the 17" rims, but it appears to be an all round tyre that will be good in the snow. I want something more like a rally mud trye, real open and aggressive.

Any suggestions and or contacts welcome.

Hello, I have driven a full winter season (and I mean snow and ice for months) with Nokian WR 225/45 on my STI7. They are just super on most winter conditions, even on braking. Have talked to a few guys (including Porsche drivers) that just love them. Have a search on the net for them and maybe you can see some tests. I am sure they are available in the UK as well.

Cheers

Mytyres.net have Pirelli & Toyo available in 215/45/17 ~ stick yer details in HERE and have a look (remember to select "winter tyres " )

You can see the tread patterns ~ the pirellis look very similar to the ones used in ice racing and are v-rated.

To be honest I think any dedicated winter tyre would do you.

I've driven a FWD golf on snow tyres in Sweden and was astounded at the grip they found on snow & ice. Probably more traction than a 4x4 jeep on normal uk summer road tyres.

I back up Nokian as well. Only in those countries where they have actual winter for more then six months know how to make winter tires. Pirelli does not stand a chance against Nokian... I use on my STI7 Nokian Hakkapellita 2 tires with studs and they are perfect for real winter with a lot of snow. I guess you don't really need studs so go for any new model studless Nokian and you won't regret. Good luck

Winter tyres these day's are quite different from the winter tyres of old. Modern tyres using directional tread patterns and silica are far better than the old "chunky" tread types which used high soot content.
In france buy law in the winter months above a sertain altitude you must fit winter tyres and have snow chains.
Pirelli do know a thing or two about making winter tyres.
I currently run Vredestein Wintrac's and so do a lot of Audi's in the alps. Vredestein by people in the know are regarded as one of the best.

One thing you must do, is fit a full set of four tyres. I have seen too many people only fitting pair's and this leads to trouble. Also some people tell you to switch of your ABS in snow, this "advice" is not only complete CRAP it is also dangerous.
I Have seen many demo's in Sweden and Norway regarding the benefits of a set of four tyres over only two and the benefits of ABS.

Have a look at http://www.tirerack.com/winter/index.jsp ,they always run some good articals on winter tyres (group test results ect) and driving.
