Brake pad residue?

Just fitted new Prodrive 330mm disks to my P1. (ouch!)
Kept the same pads as they had done very few miles. (1144's)
I now have what looks like a shinyish dark residue in a line about an inch wide round the disc face, both disc's.
Any ideas on how do I, a) get rid of it & b) stop it happening again?
I think Mr Felstead made a valuable comment on the subject a short while back but I can't find it, John?
