Is it feasible and/or sensible to fit discs yourself, specifically standard size and type? I'd like to hear comments from anyone who's done this themselves. Pros, cons, what it worth it, etc.

it easy, i changed the 2 pot disc/caliper on the my97 i had to 4 pot, i think its just unbolt the caliper and pull the disc of, if it wont budge theres two holes you can thread bolts into to so you can push it off

yep, that rings a bell. Its the act of bolting the wheel back on the car that holds the disc in place.

Easy job to do - nothing can go wrong
