How much brake fluid for a MY99?

Had my Godspeed kit fitted today, but I was surprised when the mechanic told me he only had to use 1 bottle (500ml) of brake fluid after bleeding the system.
I was told it would need 1-1.5 litres of the stuff. I gave them 3 full bottles, so there's no reason why they wouldn't have used it all if it needed it.
Does this sound right or is it way off the mark?

Thanks m8.
I'm still getting some conflicting answers though. Some say it should take more than 500ml to re-fill the system.
Anymore people care to comment. I don't want to do it myself just to prove whether it's only 500ml or not.

Ozzy,
I used about 1 & 3/4 bottles, that was pumping the pedal around 15-20 times on each corner plus replacing what I lost when I disconnected all 4 hoses and fitted new, fluid empty front calipers.
I thought that was plenty, the air was expelled after a couple of pumps, I'm sure the new fluid has flushed out the old. The volume in the pipes can't be that much.
