Question

I currently have about 3mm of tread left on my tyres and whilst I know this is more than the legal depth (1.6mm?) I was wondering when the best time to replace would be.

Do folks leave them on till they are down to 2mm or less or are there big performance/safety gains to be made by replacing them now?

Don't want to replace the boots until I have to but on the other hand I don't want to skite off the road on a wet corner!!

I leave them until they need replacing. not ideal in the rain though.

I usually find my tread is much lower on the outside front edges .

Personally I get them replaced around 2mm.

Thanks guys,

I'm going to drive down to the south of France in June ... I'm thinking of getting some new rubber just before I go - should be about right I reckon.

I changed my OEM Bridgestones at 3mm as the car had become almost undriveable, which actually was the first set of tyres I had got through for years. Usually got another car before the tyres go.

Had a mate who was a Police driver and he said they changed theirs at 3mm, although this was a few years ago now.

the 1.6mm limit is a joke. they should be changed at least by 2mm and if you have the money do it at 3mm. At 1.6 mm the tyre is dead its not goin to do the job of a slick because the compound isn't soft enough and if you get into the wet you can be in real trouble. oh and they tramline more too. have you checked the legal limit in France? i bet its more than 1.6
