I've had a couple of cars which like to squeek in reverse without a peep going forward and has never been low pads. As revers ain't used as much as forward, it could be just one of them things.
The only way for a conclusive answer is to get on your hands and knees.
A cheap set of rears can be had for £20 or there abouts from Halfords.

Cool

cheers boss, i did see they were pretty cheap so i'm not too nervous about any expense. I will have a word with chap who did my braided lines to see if he noticed how much life was left in rear pads etc & i got big service within a month so may just get it sorted then

I had it on some brakes on a previous car - was told it was an audible brake warning noise that was made only in reverse-something like when brakes wear down they expose "something" which rubs in reverse direction. Similar idea to tyre wear indictor I guess, but without the noise!
