Just got my first ever impreza last week its a MY98 uk Turbo that has been well looked after and has only done 8K miles. Has a full service history. When i first test drove it i thought the brakes were a bit poor so the dealer agreed to put new discs and pads all round, now i have been running around in the car for a week or so im still not impressed by the stopping power. My preveouse car was a renualt laguna and the brakes on that were execllent so i expected given the subaru BHP that it would have good brakes.

It has also just had a service and all fluid levels are normal, the preveouse owner has also fitted braided hoses to the brakes.

Is this a common complaint with the inpreza or could there be something else wrong with it....?

Yes on that age of car it is a common complaint.

Change to 4 pots from the MY99 or go for an aftermarket kit, depending on funds.

Standard discs and pads aren't all that good.

A set of braided hoses and new, decent quality brake fuild will also do wonders for the brakes feel.

I'm currently on Ferodo DS2500 pads which are better than standard even from cold, and don't fade even with quite rapid driving, standard pads don't even compare.

Cheap 4 pots are roughly £300 for a s/h set with low usage. Although I would be tempted to put DS2500 or Pagid blue pads in straight away.

check the dealer flushed & replaced the brake fluid during the service as this is the most common cause of poor brakes, could also be poor quality pads & discs, what did the dealer fit?? O.E. or just replacement parts - there's a world of difference!!..........what specific problems are you experiencing, might help to pinpoint the exact issue you have?
depending on your use would recomend pads, definately!!
mail me if you need any advice.........
