Question

The rear brakes or more specifically the handbrake is driving me nuts. When I'm moving slowly ie up to traffic lights or 10-15 mph in heavy traffic there is a constant squeal form the rear which can only be stopped by a slight pull on the handbrake. Problem is, that "cure" doesn't work any more. The car has been up on a ramp and had the handbrake loosened to stop the pads rubbing but it's come back again.

Any bright ideas on how to get rid of it? New pads or what?

I'm not an expert, but, having worked on all of my own cars (don't trust garages) I would suggest that the pads/shoes are'nt returning after you use handbrake or foot brake.
I suggest you remove caliper & disc & give everything a good looking at, and a clean while your there.
The shoes can get covered in alot of brake dust, so I use a spray brake cleaner to remove the muck/dirt.Check that everything looks ok(you should notice if something is out of place)check also for grit/stones, they can cause squealing.
Give the brake calipers a coat of looking at also, make sure the sliders are free & any anti-squeal shims are fitted on the pads.

Best of luck,

Dremel.

Thumbs up

Cheers Dremel.

I wondered if the copper grease had worn off as they only do it once they get warm, and they haven't been changed recently so the anti squeal shims must be in place still ( hopefully)

it's just dust in the rear drums...
get em off and either blow them out or use some brake cleaner
(wear a mask if your blowing them out tho, there's a good chap )

Like dremel said, it could be grit.
There is that much of it on the roads at the moment.
Mine do it from time to time.
Good luck
