Front Disc /Pad Upgrage
#1
I'm thinking about upgrading the front brakes on my MY98 as I don't really have much confidence in them at the moment. I know the best option would be to go to for 4 pots to replace my 2 pots and bigger discs but as the rest car isn't really modded and I don't want to spend that much I was wondering if replacing the front discs and pads with something other than the OEM Subaru ones would make the brakes a bit sharper?
Can anyone recommend any makes of disc/pad combinations that will give me what I'm looking far. Don't want to spend too much either!
Thanks in advance,
Gavin

wanted to go for AP four pots, but decided to get new pads and discs so as to have money for other stuff, got a Tarox 40 groove disc and pad kit, a lot sharper than the standard set up I had before and look a bit nicer as well, cost about £600 to buy and have fitted

Pagid disk and pads seem to be very highly rated on here, though I haven't tried them myself
You should beable to get them for about £300 and they will make a difference!

you could stick with the 2pot if you're on a budget and go for something along the lines of either "grpN" discs or Pagid grooved discs together with an uprated pad, say Ferodo ds2500 / Pagid rs4.2.1 or rs4.2 (could even use Pagid "fast road" material dependant on use and budget)
mail or phone me for any specific advice and deals.......

Don't whatever you do fit the EBC's, they're absolute rubbish on subaru's. IMO, the Pagid 8 groove discs and RS42-1 pad setup is the best 'standard' upgrade you can do, I have this fitted to my own MY00 Turbo. Can I suggest you give John or Jill at Performance Braking a call, 01600 713117, they'll be able to advise you on the best Pagid setup for your style of driving. The did for me and I'm very impressed, both with the brakes and the advice. The price was damn good too, under £300 all in IIRC.

Mike, can I get the Pagid Front Discs and Pads and keep my 2 Pots as I really don't want the hassle/expense of 4 Pots although I know it would be a much better setup. Besides I don't think I can use 4 Pots with my alloys (17" Kahns).
Like I said my car is pretty much standard in terms of power and I don't do trackdays or anything, I just want slightly better brakes.
Cheers,
Gavin

Yep, I believe you can get the discs and pads for the 2 pot calipers. If you know the diameter of the disc I've found that to help when enquiring about the availability, I know mine are 295mm but I'm not sure if yours are the same, don't *think* they are though.
Ring John at PB, he'll be able to help you.

Gavin, I've just replaced EBC Red pads( crap) with Pagid Fast road pads from Performance Braking who were very helpful. Performance is better but not dramatically so. You can upgrade to Pagid discs and pads and keep the 2 pots if you want. I think you'll find that you can change to a 294 mm disc that will run with the 2 pots & 4 pots if you should want to change at a later date.

matty01,
have you still got the original 2 pot calipers then ?
I might take a gamble on the pots not seizing (!), but I s'pose I could always replace them with further 2 pots if they did. (there's probly loads of these lying about !)

Just a comment, but I've wasted a lot of money on 'cheap' brake upgrades. I'm not suggesting you spend a fortune but from what I've read on here over the last couple of years, most people regard the old 2-pot calipers as very second division. So while your're at it, upgrade to 4-pots.
There are usually some advertised in the Private Sales section, or I believe Godspeed sell something very similar for sensible money.

I'm very interested in the results here...
My 98 UK Turbo still has original 2 pots and I could do with improving things, particularly since fitting TSL exhaust and ITG filter etc.
I have had probs last year with a sticking cylinder in one front pot, but this has been OK for 12 months now.
I've considered the Pagid upgrade (discs/pads/braided lines), but am a bit concerned that I may buy this and have to change the pots in 6 months- If so, i'd want 4 pots !
Does anyone have a view as to best way to go ? I've pondered on second hand 4 pots + pagid kit for 00 my. (Do you need to alter the rear brakes if fitting 4 pots to the front ?)
Cheers,
Mark

I have the pagid 8 groove discs (not grpn+) and fast road pads on my uk my98 and they are fine ,they do fade a bit when used really hard but loads better than standard.Try the friction workshop(sorry no no.) £200 quid excluding fitting can't be bad.So far they've taken abuse that used to warp discs on my other cars in short order with no probs.edited to add ..discs & pads from pagid available for all caliper setups i believe

Cheers,
I've mailed TSL and Godspeed for a quote for 4 pots and some advice. I know that it would make sense, plus I can stop worrying every time I hear the brakes squeal or grind that the caliper is seizing again !
Oh well, there goes another grand
