How many miles did your brakes last? Upgrade options.
#1
I am surprised how long my OE brakes are lasting (MY01). After 25k my front pads have got about 2.5k left- everything else seems good for quite a while yet. Much better than I expected.
Tyres (Toyo T1-S) seem to be wearing well too. After 12k there is still plenty of life left- the OE Bridgestones wore very unevenly & were well dead by this point.
I would like to upgrade the brakes by keeping the OE calipers. The best option I have seen discussed would appear to be Group N discs & Ferodo DS2500 pads all round.
Do you agree with this, or what else should I consider for the same sort of price? Could I expect the same sort of longevity as with the OE parts?

MY99 May registered T-Plate with 47,000 miles on the clock.
On my 2nd set of pads and discs (originals were changed at 7.5K after warping/cracking).
Now need new pads, discs on front and pads on the rear.
Not bad considering I'm very heavy on the brakes and very rarely bothered to let the cooldown or warmup
Problem with uprated brakes, you want to constantly see just how good they are and will probably end up going through them quicker.
Forgot to say, I got 30K out of my original Pirelli P-Zeros (I guess 5K too much ) and have got about 17K out of my current Goodyear Eagle F1's. They look like they'll need changing in the new year.

Thanks Stefan
Given the mileage that appears may be left on my OE brakes, is it advisale to just replace the front pads with DS2500s for the time being without any problems?

MY00 with 53k on the clock, used on track occasionally.
Changed the OE discs at 46k, OE pads lasted till 27k but were shortened lifewise by a trackday. Fitted the Pagid 8 groove discs and RS421 pads at 46k, still more than half the pad left even after a day at Spa which I had expected to wear them heavily. I'm *very* impressed with them, good increase in braking ability over OE and turned out to be cheaper than OE as well.
In terms of a 'standard' upgrade, I've been very impressed.

Bex,
You could just replace the pads. I don't have any experience of the DS2500 (although, they do get very good reports on here).
The only thing I would watch out for is the OE discs have been known to warp/crack more easily with uprated pads. This is due to the increased heat produced by the better pads (I guess they have a higher friction coefficient than the OE pads).
IIRC the Mintex 1144/1155 were a recommended upgrade by a lot of Subaru dealers in the past for use with OE discs.
It's worth asking if anyone has run the Ferodo DS2500 pads on OE discs.

Hi ,
Still on OE discs and pads after 42k . MY99 T plate, a good 6k left in them. Replaced RE010's at 35k due to poor wet grip, replaced with F1's, great in damp/wet !
Sounds like I drive like a poof, I don't though, honest !
Cheers,
Mark.
Intend to replace with Pagids next time round.

no problems putting ds2500 on std discs, but i would say that if you are getting that kind of life out of your brakes (and at the risk of losing any sale!!) you would probably get no benefit from this upgrade, though you may notice better initial bite.......

I do take your point, which is why I wouldn't be interested in say changing to six pots etc. However, it seems that I could upgrade with better replacement pads & disks for the same sort of price that Subaru charge for exact replacements.
