Just about to change the two fronts on MY01 got bridgestones at present that have lasted 20K, but have found a good deal on F1's £93 incl VAT & fit. Just would like to know are they any good, and wots the life expectancy.

Thanks
Burt

Got them on my '02 (F1 GSD3) - very good, awesome in the wet too.
Had the previous ones, GSD2 on the '01 WRX and they were outstanding too.

Just put a set on my p1. Yeh, awesome wet grip but still scrubbing them in for dry grip (not had much of that round here lately!).

Nice and predictable near the limit.

Cool

Yeah the goodyear eagle f1 dsv3's are brilliant in the wet must agree not too bad in the dry either but found they have a much higher wear rate in the dry than other tyres due to the soft compound.

Red face

Burt, how have you managed to get 20K from the front tyres ?

I thought I was doing well at 10.5K and the inner and outer edges are now bald. Ready for new ones I reckon especially since the car felt a bit wayward this afternoon on a well known fast roundabout, (2nd gear fast), felt like understeer city twitching into oversteer because I lifted off a bit sharp Car is MY02, tyres OEM Bridgestones.

How does the wear rate compare to Toyos?

I've run Toyo T1S for 2years and 35+k miles. They are very good all round but have now become to expensive. I've know fitted Goodyear Eagle F1-GSD3's and these are I would slightly better and lost me less.

Burt,

Be very very careful if you only change 2 tyres - I found out the hard (expensive) !

99.9% of the time you will be fine, but when you do reach the limit of grip, one set will give up while the other set are still gripping - this will change the handling characteristics of the car massively from progressive breakaway to a snap response.

I replaces 2 Bridgestone SO1's with SO2's and everything was fine for months until I span it one day when I didn't think I was travelling fast. I put it doen to oil on the road as I didn't even think about tyres.

It wasn't until I did the Wetter the Better course at MIRA that I understood. Don Palmer took my car out and described it as an oversteering monster and asked if I had any tread on the back - I had 4mm left, but the SO2's on the front were way more grippy !

I was unable to get the car round the circuit without losing it - it really was that bad, I went back shortly afterwards with SO2's all round and it was like driving a different car.

I know it's expensive, but it is a false economy to only change 2 tyres - you cannot enjoy the car the same.

I changed to F1's a couple of weeks ago and ditched 2 SO2's with 4.5mm of tread left on them !!!

I've got 16k out of my front bridgstones on MY01 WRX, and I thought they were still going quite strong, until I took them to a tyre specialist because of an annoying noise when driving, they told me they were knackered.

Just about to replace them with a set of F1 GSD3's from MyTyres.com got them delivered for 91 quid each.

Try Bracknell Tyre and Battery for pricing on F1's. They quoted £75 inc Vat and fitting!

Beat that then.

Just had two 205 50 16 Z Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 Tyres
fitted by Formula One. Not tried them yet though.
£90.16 each inclusive of vat, valve, fitting, balance etc.

There are many of these centres in central england.
http://www.f1autocentres.com/branches.htm

TWO QUESTIONS !!!

Are they supposed to have a funny lip and over hang the alloy ?
Is this some design to stop kerbing or to run flat or something ?

I also got told at the garage that they are ver soft tyres and will not last very long, is that true ???

Cheers.

MKC...

Wink

Yes the lip is to protect the wheels from kerbing.

They are soft'ish, but not overly soft - don't forget that soft = grip - hard rubber is not as grippy.

Anyone got any views on the difference in performance when comparing the GSD2 and GSD3, 2 being the older model I guess.

Local tyre place has ;
205 50 Z16's
GSD2's for £79.50 a corner all in, and
GSD3's for £90.64 a corner all in.

Are the GSD3 worth an extra tenner a corner or should I save £40 for a tank of Optimax

Fed up with the wear on my F1 Gsd3's,
The ouside and inside edges have gone in notime
but still 4mm in the middles
Had the alignment checked and all ok
Brilliant grip but not very impressed at the wear
The Gsd2's I had before lasted twice as long
Having some T1-s's fitted tommorrow

i just had some GSD3s fitted yesterday, so took it for a quick spin around town, no problem. Then it rained last night so I went for a cruise in the wet, also no problems.

I wasn't pushing hard though, as they'd just been fitted. The guys at my tyre place told me that I should easily get 18,000+kms off these tyres, providing I'm not too aggressive. Makes sense, you get the wear if you drive reckless or hard.

So I'm pretty happy with them, they look fast standing still and combined with my new TSW 17" rims they look mad.

Anyone got a comparision between the Bridgestone SO2/SO3's and the F1's for handling and wear rate?

Love my SO2's then SO'3's but have heard Eagle F1's better grip and on special price at local dealer at moment?

Went for GSD3's in the end, got him to knock off another fiver, so £85 per corner wasn't too bad. Only cheaper place was in Bristol at £80 a corner so not worth the petrol from Plymouth. That was from Portyre in Bristol if anyone is interested.
The most expensive quote I got was from a "Kwik Fit" type place for £127 per corner

Had S02's on my old Peugeot 306 GTi6 - absolutely brilliant tyres but only lasted 6 months before I needed to replace the fronts - that was due to my driving style tho :-)

Just replaced (weds) the old useless Goodyear Eagle Touring tyres that were on my MY00 with Eagle F1 GS-D3's. Had 6 months of fun sliding around wearing the the old ones out - now I just grip!

Too soon to tell properly but already there is more grip in the wet and dry and has already totally transformed the handling of my car. I have much more confidence and they dont tramline (if thats the correct word).

I have 205x50x16 and I have noticed the walls moving a bit when going quickly from left to right hand corners etc.

Got them from Micheldever fitted for £85 a corner.

James.
