Question - I am thinking of using a 17" wheel from a Legacy or Forester ,(looking for 6X17, Steel if possible) to run some winter tyres (165/60/17) as the snow is a comin' here in Kingswells

Anyone know if this is possible ie can you get 6X17"/6.5X17" wheels to do the job !

Russell

ps the wheels need to be 17" as I am running 330mm AP 4-pot brakes.

Russell,
The old Forester only went up to 6 x 16" ET48 wheels and those were alloy (off the turbo-S) . I think the steel ones off the 2.0 litre NA are 15".

Wuz, you don't have to change your rims just need to get a good set of snow tyres that you'll interchange with your usual tyres when the winter comes, that's what i do. For your car, i believe Michelin Pilot Alpin 205/50-17 will do fine and you want miss out on dry roads either. I would suggest Pirellis Scorpion ST's that's what i use, but smallest dimension is 225/55-17 which won't fit your arches (i think). Needless to say that my scorpions stick on dry roads much better than OEM road tires and its no comparison in the snow.(I've spent a whole week last Year playing in the snow giving 4WD a run for its money)

George

I was hoping for a slightly thinner tyre so the cars weight will force the tyre through the snow and onto the road below (thin tyres work - just ask any WRC car on a winter rally- even thoughthey also use studded tyres)

wuz, how deep of a snow & what speeds are we talking about? Anything over 8-10cm of snow and you're not going to touch the road no matter the tire size used, its going to be packed snow under the tyre footprint. You need an agressive tyre with tread depth of at least 10mm (for fresh snow) with sipes. The more the sipes the better the grip on ice. Speed;i was happily doing 140Km with my sets on a snowed covered hiway overpassing others BUT stopping is a different ballgame so i don't recommend any speeds over 80km and that if you've had some experiences. Studs; i don't suppose you own a WRC car trying to explore the cornening G's on ice? Just get a good set of winter types, they do make an immense difference even on FWD, and drive safely.

Regards,

George

pity you only have one set of wheels now, it would have been a lot easier to have them on another set of wheels wouldn't it. lol

WUZ,
There is another solution...5.5x16 GpN rally snow wheels.
The 330mm discs and AP 4 pots will fit ( believe it or not ! ) these and you'll get the right type of wheel you need for a very narrow snow tyre.
Let me know if you want details of this kind of wheel.

David, I believe I am right when I say that I spoke to you 5 days ago about Raceline RL7's and you tried punting me a set of Turini's. As it happens I have got myself a set of 18" Compomotive alloys so it is OK on that front ( you were right about the Group N and Group N+ regs - Still, I can still do the autotests and compete with the big boys on the Tarmac events.I'll just have to accept that I'll never beat them but WHO CARES as it is all about having fun INNIT

Mail me as per profile and we'll discuss these Snow wheels to see if they will be best

ps these snow wheels are for winter only - I AM NOT doing any snow rallies!

David can you post details of the wheels. I live in Auchenblae south of Aberdeen. I have an 01 wrx and a spare set of standard 17in wheels but the price of 215 45 17s in winter tyres is a bit steep.

It maybe that new wheels and non 17 in tyres are cheeper that the 215 45 17s
