Is there such a thing as a good all round brake pad? The demands of track and road are SO different...

Does anyone put 'track day' pads in, and then swop them for 'street pads' afterwards? After all no one wants longer stopping distances if it's a freezing morning and you have pads that do a great job on the 'hot' track.

I did note a big red sticker on my Pagid Blues saying 'NOT for road use' - is this since they would be a bit 'sleepy' on a freezing morning?

What a minefield!

diesel, most hi-performance pads are BETTER all round than std fit o.e. type especially the likes of Pagid "blues", Ferodo DS2500 as they are designed/manufactured to work well cold, but also to improve with heat!!
never had a problem running "track day" type pads all year round

I really can't agree with that mate (not that I KNOW ). The cooeficient of friction is surely higher for the basic low temp pads at low temps - something the race pads cant hope to achive?

Black magic! Anyone else care to comment?

no black magic, cost.

Pagid blues are about £140 for a set of pads.

The main downside is maintaining the friction at high temps can be hard on the discs.

Alyn sorted me with discs (grpN) and pads (ds2500) for my 2 pots and they are a huge improvement over stock, even from cold.

EBC redstuff bads have a bad reputation for being crap cold, but then they are crap hot too!

I would say there is always a compromise.

Ferrodo 3000's are the only pad that can live on my car on a track day but they grind hell out the discs if used cold around town for more than 20 miles. They do work from cold, actually they are very snatchy and will lock wheels unexpectedly!

2500's were fine from cold but I managed to completely fade them on the road so they ain't going on track !!

I'll be swapping between 3000/2500 for track/road.

Andy, I think you're (considerable) braking is beyond the scope of this paticular thread!

DS2500 is a good pad for me in terms of fast road use. If I track the car (with bigger than 2-pot brakes) will be looking at some pagid rs15 which everyone seems to rave about for those without absolutely huge discs.

STi, yes you can get the Pagid RS15 for the STi7 Iam sure,I have them fitted to my old 4 pots and they are just great!!!.Aprox 40/50% higher friction than the RS42's I had fitted before. You need to be very carefull when you first fit them not to stab to hard on the middle pedle as you will probably lock it all up!
Also on a plus side I have no noise from the RS15's so far.

No there isn't a good road and track pad. The only real way is to use normal raod pads for the road and a good carbon mettalic for the track.

The reason is that if you use a track pad on the road then it won't get hot enough to operate properly. By that I mean cold stops won't be as good and town driving and light braking won't put enough heat into them, which may cause deposits to be built up on the disc causing 'warp'.

The road pads are designed to work within road temp ranges.

Don't mess around, it only takes minutes to swap the front pads for a track day.

Andy F is right, DS3000 are great for the track only. I'm not sure that the DS2500 are right for either road or track and no doubt people with 'warped' discs after using them will have doubts too.

I use 'warped' in a loose sense as now I believe that most people have never had 'warped' discs but have had deposits from incorrect pad material and poor bedding in/ useage. I've seen the light and it all makes sense now

OK, thanks Floyd - i'll have me pliers at the ready and swop the pads at Bedford!

Do you think the Pagid RS15 would be best for the track, and I'll stick with the OE Axxis pads for road?

Floyd you have not tried Pagid RS15 yet then it works great from cold, it has a near flat heat curve and a friction co-efficient that is better than just about any other pad(near .6)(RS42's are .4)
I fitted mine last week and they are brilliant!!, they are also said to be kind to your disc's and last well to.
