Disk Orientation
#1
Hi ppl, can anyone advise and settle a dispute??
Ive just got grooved disks, and myself and friend
are in dispute over, which way round these should be
fitted, ie, does the top of the groove pass the pad
first,, or the bottom of the groove pass through the pad
first????, sorry if thats confusing, but its the only
way i can explain it...as many of your views would be
appreciated. (i think the bottom first)
Thanks in advance,
B.
Yeh, sorry, black diamond combi, shouldv'e said.

makes no difference unless the fins for the cooling on the top of the discs are directional (ie scoop the air into the disc) otherwise no, i put mine so the inner groove hit the pad first, just because it looked better

yes it DOES make a difference as pointed out in later replies
if you fit the disc the "wrong side" then at best the brake will be INEFFECTIVE!! and will not perform as designed
alyn - as performance

Well we have done back to back tests at out local race track and found it makes no difference to stopping distances which way the grooves are facing , the only difference it made was with dust build up on the discs , if you have them like AP says , because the grooves act similar to a snow plow as the dust will follow the groove as it passes , then the dust will be dragged in , where as if you fit them so the inside of the groove touches the pad first the dust is dragged to the outer edge of the discs , That is the only difference we have found , Ian

As flat4 said it depends on whether the vanes in the centre of the disk are curved or straight, not on the slots. Take a look at

Thanks very much for the opinions guys, they are all well
noted and much of your comments i have thought about before
fitting these. As orientation seems to make no difference,
i think i'll change them to the better looking way( bottom First),
might be a little less dusty and throw water of better also?.
thanks again guys.
