When I drive the car hard and use the brakes heavily as they get hot I get a medium pitched squeal on moderate (but not light or heavy) braking pressure from just one side, braking performance is smooth and excellent. The calipers are reconditioned, and the discs and pads are new. It sounds like something is contacting the disc, but I can see no particular areas which look to be the culprit. Have checked the shims and with the pads out the disc looks pretty central between them. Any hints? It is like the noise I got after new discs when it was a real fine balancing act to get the shims right so that the disc was not rubbed, but that happened when not using the brakes - this is only when using the brakes and when they are hot (so expanded).

John,
Have you tried putting copperslip (spelling?) on the shims, just a smear can work miracles, also, you could try shamfering the leading and trailing edge of the pads, this sometimes helps.
Ron.

John was meaning the shims used to line up the disc with the caliper when installing.
The disc has to line up central to the caliper within 1mm either side, top and bottom. Not doing so runs the risk of the disc rubbing against the caliper when braking.
John, put Copaslip on the back of the pads.

I realise this Alan, but you can use the goo between the shims, pads and caliper. It works just like Copaslip, but is just a little thicker.
John, where did you get the discs from in the end, and how much were they?

£355 pair inc VAT delivered. I don't know if the source would want to be named, but the price was good compared to the other places I rung, but not extraordinary.
