They're combined ones.

Pads for the brake, hand brake shoes for the hand brake.

(At least they are on my MY00 UK - fairly certain yours are the same.)

Easy rider:

My MY97 does this, I have found it to be worse after stopping and putting the handbrake on where the car rolls forward, After this it squeals. If you roll back onto the HB it goes away. It it much better if you adjust as much slack out of the cable as possible. I.E. get it so it is just off with the level released and it comes on almost imediately.

Cat051's reversing trick works for me, too.

I had exactly the same problem with my MY00:

SQUEEK! SQUEEK! SQUEEK! (gawd-awful it was too ) at low speeds, usually corrected by nipping the handbrake on for a second.

It was coming from the off side rear wheel, so I had a garage take off the disc and have a look.

As we looked at the handbrake shoe assembly, I noticed that a tiny sliver of friction material had partially come away from the edge of one of the shoes.
Because it had no-where to go - it just sat there like a loose tooth in your mouth, happily scraping along the inside of the disc bell.

Removing the broken bit and generally cleaning everything up has resulted in trouble/noise free performance ever since...

- So it's worth checking - your problem might not be an adjustment issue...

Rich,

unfortunaly, it's been back to the dealers 3 times for a complete investigate, strip down , clean , re copper grease & adjust. It them works fine for a while, then goes SQUEEK SQUEEK SQUEEK again!

handbrake is very snatchy too, if you pull it on, even gently, at really slow speeds - like ONLY just moving.
and if you pull it on going about 20 then the whole car shakes .. very unbalanced & ruff !!

oh well ... they're all gold now .. maybe that'll fix them !!

bl00dy handbrake is for ever giving me greef! does a squeek squeek when I slow down or move off & I have to yank it fully ON, and the release (when stationary) and that sorts it until next time!

Interesting that you say its better if it's all pinched up so it's really tight, as mine has been slackened off (by dealer on the 3rd attempt to try to fix the damn noise!) and will ratchet up about 8 or nine clicks!
may have a go at tightening it all back up and see what goes!

Steve
