Change wheels

When changing std wheels on a std family car... used to just tighten to 'firm'.
Is it more important to get it torqued correctly on a scoob?
Hence use a torque wrench?

I was told by Dad (a llorry driver) that if you torque the wheels up you stand much less chance of distorting them and therfore a better chance of them staying balanced.
I think this will work for any vehicle, although it will be more noticable on lorries doe to the wheel & tyre size and faster cars due to the speed they are driven at.
