I'm getting Car serviced today. Subaru garage just told me pads are 90% worn. Am on 36500 miles, though I do tend to work the brakes...
Emergency stopping can lead to break fade when pads are worn. A fellow Scooby driver got up close and personal with a hedge for just that reason!

Brake fade is actually caused when the brake fluid heats up and expands, this causes pockets as its evaporating and the pedal feel goes.....
Basic ways to stop this is....
Braided hoses
DOT 5.1 brake fluid
Bigger discs/better calipers (for heat reasons )
Tony
PS did i say this is quite common on subaru's with 2pots?

Huh...? I use engine braking a fair bit, consider myself a big girl when it comes to driving my car (been chased and probably shamed by everything from my neighbour's A610 Alpine to a local Mitsubishi 3000GT which seems to stick to me like glue round corners in the dry), and got 12k out of the front pads; which I thought was good.
What am I doing wrong ?

My first set of front pads lasted 22K - then I let a dealer replace them - wish I'd done it myself - complete doddle.
