Have definately established that 4pots wont fit under my wheels.

2 options now available to me:

(1) Send 4pots back and have group N+ kit fitted by scoobysport. It's not 4pots, but hey, I don't do track or much heavy breaking anyway.

(2)Keep 4pots, have set of gorgeous 18" Technomagnesia Detroit F1's fitted (about £1,100.00) as well - might not be an option, still trying to scrounge enough ££££ together and by pass the girlfriend.

Which would you do, will the 18" look ok on standard suspension or will the car look like it's on stilts!

Will handling be adversely affected either?

Comments please, must make a decision by tomorrow lunchtime.

Cheers

Chris

Make sure you get discs with a separate bell. Warping those is unlikely.

These discs have a separate bell made of aluminium which is lighter.

As you probably remember, I'm in a similar situation to you

No fun!!

I like option 2, if you can afford it, but I remember someone saying that certain tyres rub on things (like the plastic bits in the wheel arches that you will probably remove) and certain tyres work fine. Can't remember which ones are which...

I'm looking for 17" replacements, but I live in a potholy area, so I think 18" wheels would be uncomfortable for me, but would look great.

BTW any suggestions for hiding wheel purchases from the girlfriend?

I have 18" wheels on a MY96. Mine are Radius R3s. They will fit fine.

Make sure the wheels are the correct offset or you MAY get the said rubbing problems. Detroits are ET48 offset I think which you should get away with, but better to go ET50-55 but some people swear by 48s.

Only thing is the weight of the 18" wheel will probably be a lot more so it will put greater stresses on your standard suspension which is designed for a 16" wheel.
Ride quality will be a bit worse and it won't handle quite as good as it could. With bigger wheels, it is wise to uprate the suspension too. I made do with lowered springs for a while, but now my dampers are goosed (probably not helped by the 18s) and I'm going for the full setup.

There are plenty of 16" and 17" wheels though that will fit over 4 pots. In fact, my brother has a set of 16s if you want to buy them that fit over 4 pots. Although they'll need refurbing (about £140).

Cheers

Rich

dnb - a blindfold

Rich, don't want to go smaller than 17" but thanks anyway.

Getting a bit fed up with it to tell the truth, might just send the 4pots back and be done with it.

Not sure I want to spend £2,000.00 (4pots, wheels/tyres rear discs/pads plus labour) on a MY96 with nearly 50K miles, might be better off selling up and trying to buy something a bit newer.

What do you think?
