I want to have 4 pot calipers, and also want to keep my Speedline 17" superturismos (spelling...) at least for a while.

What is the deal with wheel spacers?
I don't particulatly like the sound of these, but where can I get them from and how much?

The alternative is to sell the 4 pot calipers or the speedline wheels...

 

Also, if I choose to change the wheels, what can I expect to sell the 17" Speedlines for? (assuming gold, in good condition with 6 month old PZeros.)

And what will fit as a replacement and not cause lots of new problems? - pref. something that looks similar to the prodrive speedlines, as the wife likes them

Ahh, spacers. An interesting subject, most people will say do not run spacers, but I've been running 15mm spacers on each of my front wheels for a few months now. Why? well, the brake kit I had fitted was just too damn wide to fit under my wheels. I've not had any problems yet, and fingers crossed I won't

Someone pointed me to scoobysport but I have yet to get a price. I will let you all know when I do.

 

All you need to get around the brake caliper size problem is wheels with a bigger offset. I wouldnt use spacers, I would sell the wheels and get wheels with the right offset to accomodate the brakes, especially for track and fast road use. If you just cruise around, spacers are not a problem.

 

Am looking at OZ P1 style (can't remember name...) wheels. However, I'm being put off by the cost...

Yep, dead easy solution spend £1000 and get wheels that fit . I don't want to spend that sort of money and i also think that this wheel is one of the nicest looking on a Scoob, so i do not want to change them I agree that for track use i won't consider them but the sort of loads that are generated fo roads use (including fast road) shouldn't be a problem.

If you have any luck finding 7mm spacers let me know. I need some asap.

Wheel offset has no effect whatsoever on caliper clearance. It's wheel spoke shape that dictates this. All different offsets do is alter the relationship between the wheel centreline and the hub bolting flange.

If wheel brand "X" won't clear the brakes in (say) ET45, then the same shape wheel won't clear them in (say) ET55, or any other offset.

I did not source the spacers, they were sourced for me, so I have no idea on where from or the cost, but will find out and report back.

Dave is correct, offest is not the main issue really it's spoke clearance. People have said "18's will fit over the calipers" ummm, no they won't, unless right design, and there are not that many about.

As said, I got my 01 wheels cos I liked them, and spending more money on wheels is not an option I'm prepared to take, and at the moment, touch wood, I've not had any problems with spacers at all.

 

Hi Dave - but doesn't offset affect the spoke design?

I run the same brakes as Markus, but rather than use spacers I fitted different design wheels and specc'ed the bell thickness to give clearance.

To be honest, it makes no difference really, the load on the bearings is still increased - but what the hell, I'd rather have decent brakes and replace wheel bearings every 9-12 months than the sh*tty OE calipers/disk size and lose 5-10% on my laptimes, lol!

Running on slicks represents more of a strain on the bearings....of course, running on slicks and increasing the track.....lol!

If you check my posts from a few years back I was absolutely against deviating from manufacturers offsets - I did it once on a mkII Escort and crashed it. However, after trying a friends Scoob with et45 and wider bells I was sold

Only thing I'd say is if you do run spacers, make sure they're very good quality ones (perfectly machined).

As far as offset is concerned, if Dave TS and others know that it doesnt affect the caliper clearance, my presence in this thread is not needed.
