Default More brake judder!

Afternoon all.

I'm not exactly a regular around here but long time lurker. I will introduce myself properly is due time.

As for now I have a Ring trip booked in June so currently trying to work my way through a fair few jobs and niggles I've been putting off, anyway brake judder...

So I put a set of discs and Performance Friction Z rated pads on the car last summer as an upgrade, unfortunately after only a few thousand miles the judder appeared it's ugly head.

I took some advice at the time that the pads were a little to sporty for daily use and weren't getting to correct temps to avoid uneven deposits and correct disc cleaning etc.

So I fitted new plain discs and a set of bog standard road pads from ICP. Bedded in correctly and gently over 300 miles.
They've been perfect for a few months but now when you brake hard from 70mph+ there is very violent judder through the steering wheel, when driving around normally they're absolutely fine. It does feel temp related as it comes in light but progressively gets worse the more you use them.

Bearings/suspension/steering all checked okay.

Can anyone recommend a disc and pad combo that are a little more reliable and resistant to judder developing? Ideally
needs to suit light track and road use.
I was thinking CL RC5+ as they don't work by transferring material to the disc rather burning the disc out instead.

only time i had an issue like that (which wasnt on an impreza) was wheel bearing had been replaced previously and not pressed fully home and as such caused hub run out which in turn cause disk to warp and brake judder. new disks/pads fixes it for a while before it warps the disk again eventually

do you know if its had wheel bearings replaced?

No the history is quite extensive but no mention of any wheel bearings, it's just ticked over 100k.

do your pistons run free in and out on the front calipers? maybe there not releasing off fully.

try stamping on your brake then driving 2 miles without touching the brake, use the handbrake to stop you and see if the fronts have any heat in them.

this will also tell you if its a heat related brake problem

All four calipers have been professionally refurbished. Problem is still present...

I'm using the cheap pads ICP sell for £50 for a full set, call me tight but I got ten as a stop gap and they appear to perform really well for price. Maybe they're not upto the demands?

Yes. I fitted CL RC5+ pads as I was advised they would scrub the discs clean and because they work by not transmitting pad material to the disc any further pad deposit problems would be avoided.

After initial fitting still very juddery but after 10+ heavy brakes at temp the vibrations slowly lessened until there was no judder.

Pads are also crazy sharp, I felt like the front bumper was going to dive into the road everytime I broke hard.

Do these pads squeal? Could be an option! I was going to replace both discs & pads but could try this first.

Yeah unfortunately they do squeal, quite badly at low speed and light applications.

Also incredibly dusty, but it's a worthwhile trade off when you get to feel how they perform.

The pads I have fitted at the moment squeal a bit at slow speed especially first thing, and seem a bit dusty. I think they're Mintex pads going by what the seller said so the CL pads sound like they won't be any worse in terms of noise and dust.

It's exactly the same issue I have with my hatch every 3-5000 miles, extreme judder through the steering wheel when breaking at 40+mph.

I've had the hub faces, wheel bearings and calipers checked and all have come back fine. A lot of hatch owners reporting this issue with front breaks, Subaru don't acknowledge it so I've decided to upgrade the setup.

Good luck sorting it out.

CL RC5+ pads fitted for over 5000 miles now and no brake judder anymore, stopping power is vastly improved too.

I had to grind a little off the back plates though and out the box they were a very tight fit into my caliper restricting movement.

I still haven't got round to fitting my set yet, I'll try and get it done soon as I'm keen to see how well these pads perform.

Superbly, the performance from cold is amazing.
The only thing I struggle with when hot is a little moderation, they have a kind of all or nothing feel can make braking in traffic quite jolty.

😭 I've had the same issue for last few months. Any braking from 60+ caused crazy judder through the steering. Changed pads and it didn't go away. I have the Godspeed J hook disc n pad combo... can this be related to worn out brake fluid? Does anyone know what is actually happening to the wheels/braking system when my steering wheel judders?

Nothing to do with brake fluid, it's where the discs aren't completely smooth and as you apply pressure the pads are fighting back causing vibrations.

I also changed my front wheel bearings just to be safe but there was no play in my old ones.

I've got the same issue on my v7 sti bug really bad brake juddering at speeds above 70 mph,, discs and pads have only done 2000 miles got them from Godspeed doing my head in... Would they be warped after only 2000 miles..

Very rare for a disc to warp , but it can happen , those with Juddering , go out and do a few hard high speed stops from 70-80-90 ( where it's safe to do ) down to 20 then drive a bit to cool them off between stops , if it's pad deposits there should be a change in the juddering.

We had a hatch in this week with the same symptoms , stripped the front brakes of and there was quite a rust build up on the drive flange face so the disc was not sitting perfectly causing the disc to runout , customer was convinced all was fitted right as he took them to a main dealer to fit.
We cleaned the rust off the hub face , applied copper slip to hold the rust at bay cleaned up the inside face of the bell , juddering gone.

The discs have to be fitted correctly in the first place to have any chance of being reliable and not cause issue's.

I just brought my car yesterday and noticed on the 80 mile journey home under braking above 30 mph the steering wheel wobbles/judders ever so slightly left to right. The previous owner has fitted godspeed g hook discs and kevlar pads with braided brake hoses and refurbished calipers 6 months ago and only covered less then 4000 miles. It also has bc coilovers fitted could it be a tracking problem or braking any thoughts much appreciated.

I wish it was this simple. I'm looking to upgrade my brakes to see if I can get rid of the issue.

Indeed, in my case I had changed the bearings and they came with new hubs and studs paired to a set of new discs so I knew the contact area between the two was spotless
