Default V5 Type R - Nurburgring Tyre Question

Taking my V5 Type R to the Nordschleife in June.

Due to my current set up and tyre profile 215 x 35 x 18 and the limited choice in tyre, (currently sitting on Uniroyal Rainsport 3s), I was wondering if anyone could advise if it is worth changing the profile of the tyre to a 40 to get a better choice of tyre for the Ring?

Nothing wrong with the Uniroyals - in fact I have been very impressed with the performance, especially in the wet, and may just leave them on the car, as they are only 2 years or so old with about 8-9000 miles on them.

However I've always been a fan of the Goodyear Eagle F1 or the Michelin Pilotsport...or should I go for a road legal semi-slick track tyre?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated - not going to race/impress anyone, just want to have a nice safe and progressive session on the track.

June can be a bit dodgy there, and it does rain a fair bit there too, I'd be inclined to leave what you've got on and just use them up out there, you won't be breaking any lap records so just concentrate on getting there and back in good shape.

LOL - Thanks very much mate. Not everyone's cup of tea because it's not OEM and looking like every other V5 Type R - but that's why our wives or partners don't all look the same either....thank god

Haven't really took many recent pics as I have been busy upgrading suspension bits - just the obligatory "Shellfie" or two

Popped my dragstrip cherry at York a couple of months ago in full road trim with 3/4 tank of fuel and my 110kg fat backside in the car and did an 11.8 secs 1/4 mile - which I was over the moon with all things considered.

Nice one, mate. Car looks amazing, as always. And that's a quick time for the 1/4.

The car looks pretty low in the middle photo. Do you get any front-end graze on an undulating b-road?

What suspension bits have you upgraded?

Thanks mate. No haven't had any issues so far with front end graze - even with the speed bumps in the local roads either - sitting just right.

Just had Whiteline 22mm Front ARB to match the Rear one, Whiteline front caster bushes and Whteline adjustable front droplinks and then a full 4 wheel alignment done.

Going to upgrade turbo & injectors next (when I come back from The Ring) and up the power for the last time. Any more after that would just be a bit too much I think.

Which turbo would you go for and what kind of power is your engine built to handle?

All depends if you have clearance for a 40 profile and if you can raise it up a little if not...17" an option or brakes too big? A few places like the carousel which are not very forgiving

Going for a Lateral MDX321V Plus - should be good for close to 540-550 BHP & 500+ Ft/Lbs

Engine is easily strong enough for 700 so no worries there

Thanks mate - had a word with my specialist today and he too said the 40 profile would risk rubbing the arches with the current set up and suggested a 225 tyre on the 35 profile as that would still give it a bit more meat

yoko ad08r or nankang ns2r

the only issue is they come up wider than a normal tyre so you may incur rubbing !

Is there a plus version out to the normal V turbo?

It is the "Motorsport" or "Time Attack" version that uses a bigger compressor wheel, compressor cover, and exhaust housing.

The car looks great but is way too low IMHO.
The Ring is a bumpy track and you need suspension travel otherwise you will be skipping all over the place at sections.
As Pink Ninja said, 17s and a higher profile tyre would help.

Unless you are attending a track day, you will be fine with your road tyres. It will take you more than one visit to begin to get your head round where you are going. Obey the yellow lights and flags, slow down and keep it down until you pass the next set of lights which are not flashing (this could be several KM). They are well spread apart.
Avoid lapping in the wet until you have an idea of where you are going and where the really slippy parts are. Its lethal and like ice in places.
Don't be a hero, your standard insurance won't cover you for you, your car or any damage you do to yourself or anyone else or the barrier. They will pay out and hunt you down for repayment. Crashing is not an option.!!!
Finally, I have drained any coolant out of my system and run water only. If you drop coolant and someone falls off because of it, you are liable.
Im sorry if this all sounds harsh but it has taken me 4 years and many laps to see so many people become a victim in a place that requires maximum respect and a lot of common sense.
Treated right this place is the best place in the world. Pm me if you need any info on where to stay, where to eat and drink and get merry.

haha. cheers. glad i could shed a little more light for you. You will be hooked after your first visit. The place is out of this world. We are out there for a track day in April so that will be a nice start to the season. Just in the process of replacing the suspension and rear brakes on mine so will be taking that across after that. When are you guys heading out? Ten Virgin motors. amazing road trip.

Also remember that three quarters of the corners on the ring are late apex so don't turn in too early. treat it like the back roads in the UK. Get your foot down when you can see the road ahead and cool off when you can't.

Thanks very much for all the advice bud - as it happens that is the exact video I have been watching along with a few others

There are 11 cars and 19 pilots - 8 Subarus (7 classics & 1 Blobeye all running between 350-550bhp), 1 BMW 335d, a BMW Z4 with over 400bhp and a Vauxsausage Astra with over 530bhp. Really excited....with a healthy dose of apprehension/nervousness at the same time!

I have ben to the Ring 16 times, and you are spot on in your writing.
Also remember, if a guy is behinde you, and was'ent there before, then he is faster, indikate right, and let him by, mabye YOU Can learn from his lines.
Never race, and as said, make films, and look at the times in the evening ��
Drive safe..... And enjoy, a lot ��
