Godspeed brakes.....
Hi guys, just a quick question...
Changing my pads, discs and 1 of my front calipers are sticking, so gonna change the whole lot,
Saw a great deal for the whole lot on Godspeed website for brand new 4pot calipers, with bluestuff NDX pads, and grooved discs with the fitting kit, for my Impreza classic 98,
All for the total price of £399.50
Is this a good buy or will I keep looking,
Thanks for input guys, Mark...

I bought the grooved disks and kevlar pads for the front of my blob and they were both warped from new. I took them and got them skimmed and they have been fine since. Maybe just a bad batch though. I havent contacted them so I cant really speak bad of them. As I say maybe a bad batch.

Circumstances changed shortly after and the car got broken for parts. Still have the discs that covered less than 1k miles sat in the garage.

Well I live in N.I and it was simpler for me to just get them skimmed rather than get them sent back across the water. As I said before it could have been a faulty batch and Im sure that godspeed would have put it right. Thats why Im not talking bad of them as I didnt contact them or give them the chance to replace them as Im sure they would have.

Yes we do stand by our guarantee , which we even offer when people do track days , you won't find that anywhere else.
The discs we use are a very good quality , very rarely we get issues , but then all discs can have issues , we have had to skim AP , Brembo and even PF discs for people who have warped them in the past .
We never sell discs that are warped out of the box , as they are checked for run-out , its very rare to get a disc that does run-out , if we find one before grooving , its sent back , if someone finds they have run-out when fitting new discs , its usually down to not cleaning the hub face properly , if rust and dust is left on the hub surface the disc will never run true , we've had cars here who bought discs from us , and had them fitted by a mechanic , it comes to us as they say the discs are warped , and the state on the hub faces is awful , we clean them as they should be , apply some copper slip to keep the rust away , customer goes away happy with no run-out , its a simple job , and when not done its just poor workmanship.
There are quite a few reasons why a disc can feel warped , a lot of them are nothing to do with the quality of the disc , could be poor bedding in , most of the time its pad deposits , you can usually see a pad shape or lines on the disc face , this is due to the pads usually being taken over there designed temp range , ie , using too mild a pad for the use , we have had people buy our kevlar pads because they are the lowest priced ones we offer , then have complained that they don't suit the 500hp monster they rag around , or don't suit the trackdays they do , we NEVER recommend kevlar pads for this use.
If you have pad deposits , they usually clean off when fitting a more suitable pad for the driving style.
A lot of the time with the Subaru 4 pot calipers its issues with the caliper , they are prone to sticking and seizing , and if left like this , the pads do not release off the discs , which causes the discs to overheat , this will warp a disc if left like this.
We have had people on the phone saying they have had to use a hammer to fit the pads in place !
You can tell if your calipers are working right when fitting new discs and pads by looking at the old pads your'e removing , all 4 pads should be about the same thickness in length and width , it doesn't matter having a small variation , but more than 1mm difference usually shows the calipers are dragging , we have seen some pads worn into a wedge the calipers were so bad.
As there are many reasons for discs feeling they are warped , if someone has an issue we have them sent back here for us to test , we can check them out and find out what is wrong , if the issue is down to the discs any issues are put right , if the issue is something else , ie , sticky calipers , this is not covered by our guarantee and there would be a small charge to skim them.
We do try and be fair , but not open ourselves up to people abusing our guarantees , which people do , in a perfect world it would be great to just send a new pair of discs out to the customer to fit , but that's unfair on us if its not the discs fault , and down to poor workmanship .
This is an info sheet we have that explains it slightly , you will find in depth info on google
Hope this helps

To be fair to Ian, I bought the grooved discs and once fitted they shook like mad when warm. Obviously I went down the warped disc route and gave him a call. He told me to send them back but it would be unlikely that the discs are at fault. So I investigated further and found the pad wasn't retracting properly. Obviously thought this was a sticky piston so I ordered new seals and stripped and rebuilt them. Turns out when I stripped them down, all the seals were fine and one of the ebc pads was slightly oversized and the garage had wedged it in rather than file it down. All back together and fine now, it just shows that a warped disc is always the first thing that people jump to when it's not always right.

Most of the time its not the fault of the discs , people just blame the disc straight away , usually being told by people who don't know or understand themselves.

I bought the complete set up with new WRX PRO four pot calipers, and I can't fault them fair play, and as Ian pointed out if you don't clean the hub or calipers to the point where you have to hammer the pad in, how the hell do you expect them to work properly.
And when just changing your pads if one side is 5mm thick and the other is 2mm thick then you clearly have a sticky caliper, and the pads will be dragging and causing that disc to warm up to the point where it could warp.
In a car with nearly 300BHP i'd rather know all my brakes are pulling up evenly and that it's not going to shoot off to the left or right due to a sticky caliper, hence why I went for a brand new set of four pots, when I press the brake pedal I want to know its going to stop in a straight line.
