Default Non servo brakes- a few lessons learned

For those about to go through this, a few pointers as I struggled to find any info:

  • Unless you are going to get an AP or similar pedal box at £700+, use the standard pedals- the rest seem to crack;
  • Redrill your brake pedal to get more leverage- go for about 5.5 seems to be the ticket (remove the brake bushing from it as well, or you will melt it when you re weld the original hole, apparently lol);
  • I bought a servo conversion kit from Compbrake- its OK but the rod bent as its too thin- try and adapt it if you get it to use the standard rod- which is thicker and stronger! Its bloody important!
  • On newage Brembo's, master cylinders of .625 front, and 0.7 rear, seems about right;
  • I also went with a .625 for the handbrake, which works (0.7 didn't);
  • I tried a variety of pads and nearly went back to servo brakes! Carbonne Lorraine are the ticket- like night and day- I went for RC8's as its my rally car;
  • I use Godspeed grooved discs (they also supplied the pads) which I rate highly, although appreciate they will get a little more wear now!
