Default do i need a new caliper

Hey, ive noticed on my 03 wrx the driver side front brakes have been hot and can smell burning. The others seem fine, today I went to do a brake pad change and started with the driver front, I managed to push 3 of the pistons back no bother but the 4th wouldn't budge at all. I'm guessing its seized. Does this mean I need a caliper change?

Sounds like they need refurbing. Get BOTH front calipers done and I'd advise fitting stainless steel pistons to stop them seizing in the future.

I've often wondered what the negatives are to Stainless Steel pistons. I assume there is some other than just pure cost, anyone know any scientific reason against them?

Just cost , no other reason not to fit them

Do all 4 of the pistons just push back in or does a couple need wound back in? I noticed on the piston that wouldn't push back the rubber seal wasn't tight and came off without force?

I'd have them off and have them to Ian at Godspeed. (See above).

They come back better than new

No they should all push in fairly easily , if not then they are the sticking / seized ones.
The seal will pop off easy as they are only a dust seal help on by a metal clip , the fluid seal is inside the bore of the caliper , you can't see them unless you remove the piston
Cheers Ian
