Default Need to replace a tyre, do I have to fit 2 tyres?

I've got a slow puncture which is on the sidewall and therefore not fixable. Gutted as my tyres have only done a few thousand miles! Do I need to change both on the same axle or as they are fairly knew can I get away with changing one? What difference in tread depth can I get away with on the same axle? Thanks

Generally it is advisable to replace tyres in pairs on the same axle. It may be prudent to get a part worn tyre of the same brand and depth.

Or consign the decent one to the full-size spare you carry, (you DO carry a full size spare, don't you?), and fit two.

Thanks for your advice guys. No, I don't have a full size spare. Haven't had the car long and it's a sti hatch on Prodrive GT1 alloys. Trying to find one of those alloys I assume will be like trying to find rocking horse ****?!

I'd like to see someone fit a full size spare into that poxy space Subaru left, without killing the already pitiful boot! If you've only done a few K on the car I'd stick the new tyre on the front left and hit some roundabouts hard. Seriously though, you do need to be careful with tyre wear to ensure you don't trail out the diffs but realistically if they're within a mm or so you should be fine.
