Default Front mount

Hello all,

Thinking of changing from tm to front mount on my WRX.Running about 340bhp with the changes made already.

Prices range from £300 upwards?

What are the benifit?

Is the price a big factor?

Tell me what you think?

Cheers.

At that power level you would be better off going for a STi tmic, fmic will give you lower charge temps, better for high speed runs, no heat soak in traffic but due to longer pipework may increase lag slightly.

Maybe they should try and have a go of a FMIC'd car and see if they notice/are bothered by the lag. Some people are, I barely noticed.

there are lots of front mounts on the market,be carefull of some of the cheap ebay ones as they will probably be worse than what you have already got.the hybrid ones seem about the best ones for the cheapest price.if you wanted to spend some more money the aps and hyperflow are good front mounts but are quite expensive.

If you are adamant in changing to a fmic (you're mind already seems to be made up) then you wont go far wrong with a Hybrid fmic, I may have a 2nd hand for sale soon.

It would help if I knew your model year and mods.

In my experience lag attributable to a front mount is just another scooby myth. Either that or it is an exceptionally poorly designed FMIC. The cause of lag blamed on the front mount is often down to other factors as many people on here can attest.

To be fair, I bought the biggest I could find, and on the std. turbo it was a bit laggy....

But that VF35's days were numbered....

LOL

setup issue then, not got lag issues on mine and i know NS04 went from TM to FM with no other changes other than a map tweek and he gets no lag.

in 99% of cases its just a setup at fault. only time i know of lag that isn;t a setup is when you run a TD04 with a fornt mount, but thats an ickle turbo lol

according to some saturday night scribblings on back of envelope, I reckon there's about 5 cubic feet in the entire pipe run and intercooler core?

TD05 could move that amount of air in a little over a tenth of a second. I understand that's not precisely what's involved, but gives you an idea of the scale and therefore the veracity of people's claims that they're seeing massive lag.

Dunx / Tweaks : You may have experienced lag but did you have an efficient core? Was the core too big for your application? This is one time when biggest is not necessarily best. What other factors could have caused the lag such as mapping?
Please don't say XXX mapped my car and it was right. I have lost count of the times a car has come to me with lag attributed to a front mount when the problem lay elsewhere.
With Steve Simpson last week I changed the core only on his Murtaya Sports Rally Car and after mapping we went from 293 bhp to 315 bhp, charge temperatures were down 10C. and more importantly the spool which had been 3900 rpm on the rollers in 4th to 1 bar was now 3300 rpm. After removing his exhaust box and a restrictive section of piping and further mapping we called it a day with 324 bhp. Now that was just last week. I can give you several other recent examples and there are a couple of dozen in the past couple of years.

Yes it was too large, but as my car always will be "work in progress" I saw it a future-proofing, as the next step is a 2.1 stroker and yet another, ( bigger ! ) turbo.

dunx

P.S. Dazer you don't need to change that till you are past 400 bhp. IMHO.

Is anyone running 400bhp on standard wrx internals and gearbox?

Having run an STi8 TMIC at 392 bhp and changing to a Hybrid FMIC there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that in terms of ACTs and power the Hybrid FMIC is the one to go for. Front mounts with lag are either inefficient cores, badly designed pipework or issues not related to the FMIC itself.
Have those promoting STi8 TMICs or larger core aftermarket TMICs actually run both in identical circumstances, recorded ACT and done before and after power runs?

No, you'll probably break both if you aim that high, IMHO

dunx

P.S. Doesn't mean it won't be fun whilst it lasts.....

I remember what you said to me last Thursday....

Sell it before it breaks (?)

dunx

P.S. Early WRX was closer to an STI motor than the New-Age models, IMHO.

early wrx with the closed deck was a pretty hardy motor tho....
