Aye.. those tight twisties weren't the cars hunting ground....and is where the power to weight figures told... An improved chassis setup would have closed the gap as it loads up the front with some lean. On the more open roads the torque came into play and the chassis wasn't as troubled with the extreme wieght transference and keeping up was no trouble.
The 'manual' shift is a thing of beauty (very fast, precise and silky smooth), but not as direct or offering the same control as a standard box and hard charging did confuse it sometimes (still auto changing up when it hit the redline or changing down when it felt too low in the gears). It also saved me a few times when I got mixed up on the flappy paddles and tried changing down at max revs. I'm still hunting for some good write ups on the box and how to disengage ALL auto functions if at all possible (except the safety!).
The low ratio steering and whole feel of the car is stunning. The M Sport seats are the best I've ever used (just edging the Recaros in my old WR Sport). Being able to tighten the side bolsters at will was amazing. The overall comfort (low cabin noise levels) and toys (brake assist cruise, auto lights and wipers, telephone prep and the superb Sat Nav / audio / iDrive all managed by voice) made the drive home a lot more pleasurable and bearable.
Did I mention the Ave 38 MPG or getting all the way back from Brienz to the Maidstone M20 services (613 miles) on a tank ?
In summary, for a barge I was most impressed. Not up to scratch in some areas of direct 10/10ths performance driving relative the Scoob, but as a whole package it really is a stunning motor...
(now who the hell would have thought that about a Diesel?????)

Dave...... Diesels have turned a corner mate. Previously they were smelly, noisy and really only for vans and commercial applications. But the new breed of engines cannot now be so easily disregarded. The trip opened my eyes to the ability of them (the one in the 335D probably being one of the best in the World today??). Very little noise (just noticeable at tick over) but smokeless and with a lovely aggressive growl from inside the cabin.
I also have the optional BMW flame suit. It's definitely got some serious scorch marks on, but I'm unmarked on the inside....

mines nice too
Nice one mate. Who mapped yours? Did it effect the fuel consumption?Got a reply from e-maps who can do 350 / 700 nm for about £400. Done on the drive with a simple flash.....
How does she drive now with the extra power?
Just a few Q's to be getting on with!!

Do more research Al, as you are well aware a generic flash isn't always the best long term option. Some like Prodrive's PPP maps are very safe but don't get optimum performance, others can be a recipe for disaster but initially astounding. You can't beat a good bespoke map done by someone who knows their beans on road or rollers. I could have flashed my Furby for £200 less, but got Jabba to ramp up the boost gradually to not scare the learners too much, and tail off the fuelling at the top end to protect the turbo.
