laptop stolen!
so you all know i've been off work ill, then i had some holidays booked, got back into work and found out my works laptop has been stolen!!
i'm sooooooooooooo annoyed!!! not because of the laptop because its fully encrypted cos we are safe and secure, but because the swines stole my laptop bag which i bought myself, and inside it was a dinky mouse of my own, all my holiday details for May and a half-read book!!!
its not just the stuff thats missing, but the fact that someone violated the sanctuary of my "secure" office and blinkin pinched it!!

Part of my job is to write the various security strategies and deal with investigations into IT losses and I can sympathise with how much of a pain loosing a laptop can be.
I'm glad to hear you encrypt the hard drive (well done to your IT management)!!
Hopefully it was regularly backed up too? Get yourself a Kensington lock for the next one and secure it to the desk or inside the drawer. We have a thousand laptops and loose the odd one or two due to theft. Even from within the building. Staff, cleaners & even security staff will be tempted.. Have you any CCTV? We're looking to use RFID tags to secure all V&A (valuable and attractive) items with sensors on the doors that register the time a device went through them. Good for assett tracking and finding the people who walk out with such stuff.
Hope you get it replaced and working soon.

A cleaner at work got caught nicking a laptop, so they moved her to a different site....
Bloody ethnic minority "special" rights ?
I bet I'd get sacked in the same circumstances.

bah, i usually lug it out home with me every night, so its not a problem normally, just that night i left it in the office for some bizarre reason. hard drive not a problem anyway as we all work over citrix, plus with high profile data losses government wise, we had to make sure ours were safe. i have special telecom apps that i use from the lappie, so its just a pain more than anything else, cos now i have to build myself a new one up with a trillion pieces of software!!
i honestly cant say it wasnt someone actually within the office either...wouldnt surprise me, seen it happen before!!
as for cctv, they've no chance, the guys here can't even pinpoint an actual date that it was stolen (helpful) so all we can do is see if the police turn it up anywhere. but beware if you're offered an HP NC4010 in the pub....it might be mine!!!
so its just a whinge, cos i need a good whinge!!! just upset more than anything, cos someone swiped my beloved!!
