Default sticking thermostat? if not what?

never had a problem before but about 3 weeks ago went out to the car and the battery was dead but i had only been out in it about an hour before. Jump started it straight away then not a problem started everytime for the last 3 weeks, went out to it tonight and was dead again but had only been back for about 2 hours and was fine then, tonight when i put the jump leads on i noticed the fans came straight on, i started the car it ran for about a minute and the fans turned off. This is what makes me think the thermostat is sticking open thus causing the fans to keep running after i have turned the car off hence flatening the battery. This sound right or am i barking up the wrong tree???

checked battery its charging and holding charge ok, what was weird was the fact after 2 hours off standing when i put jump leads on the fans start to run and continue to run for about a minute after car was started up. This has led me to think the fans had been running constant thus leading to the flat battery, when my cars hot sometimes when i turn the ignition off the fans can keep running but normally cut out after a few minutes.

Are you sure the battery is flat, ie, do you have to use the key to get in or is the lock motor still working via the remote on the keyfob. When you get in does the interior light come on and do the headlights work without the ignition on??? If they dont, it can only be battery not holding/taking charge or alternator not putting charge in. Myguess is ht cable or earth fault,,,,, BUT its a guess and Im no expert. I suggest you get it down to David at API(he is an expert) and let them look over it.
