Default strange rattle getting worse!!!!

since buying my impreza i have always had a rattle just off tickover, sounded like a heat sheild to me so never had it checked. Then it got a little louder so dropped it into a local garage who had a listen and said it sounded to be coming from right head maybe a cam bearing and was looking at £300 labour. At the next meet mark (black widow) kindly had a listen and said not mains but it was so slight a noise not to worry about it until it gets worse as its looking for a needle in a hay stack, well the time has come as today it started to rattle its t*ts off. to me it sounds bearing now and getting a bit worried so have stopped driving it but it is my daily driver and need it sorted asap. so guys any ideas what it could be and any advice on where to take it, i dont want to take another mortgage out lol i think a specialist would be best rather than a local garage guessing!!!! im in stourbridge/dudley westmidlands

Has it become a rattle, a tap or a rumble, have you dropped the new chip into it yet and a stupid one have you checked the oil level.

Dad's car had a similar noise. Went from little noise every now and then, to very loud all the time. Turned out to be the tensioner on the cambelt.

it was the water pump, it was totally shot so why it was been done i had a cambelt kit put in and they also spotted the cam and crank oil seals leaking so i had all those changed as well. While it was there i got them to fit the new decat that had been delivered that morning, glad i did as every bolt on the turbo had siezed on had to get some heat on them to get them out. i managed to get all that done for £340 all in and its running spot on now and sounds awesome.
