Oil & Change Procedure
Hi All, Ok i'm fed up of being told different information on various forum threads. I want to change my oil this weekend, Opie oils recommend a 5w-40 fully synthetic but the subaru garage local to me say i should use 5w-30 semi synthetic ??? And also need advice on the best way to do, from what I've read i should:
- Take out sump plug (When engine is still slightly warm)
- Drain all oil
- Remove filter
- Put sump plug back in with new plug washer
- Fill the filter with oil and put that back on (Hand tight)
- Pour the rest of the oil into the engine
- Disconnent the crank sensor and turn the engine over for approx 10seconds to build up oil pressure.
- Re-connect crank sensor and start the engine
- Finished!
Well oil wise mate 5-30 isn't good, thats what the manual says I think, and probably what the garage is saying as low knowledge on scoobs... I run 10-40 semi, I could run fully syn though. Depends on your build and what you use the car for.
10/40 is what the manual states and i use 10/40 semi and it works for me.. also if you are going to be changing at every 3k miles then i don't really see any point in spending a fortune on race spec oils (10/50 or even 60's). if your engine also has low miles under 90,000 then i run an oil flush through the engine too. .i run flush through with engine running for 15 mins, then stop engine, take off filter then the sump and let it bleed dry. attatch new filter and fill her up, remember to hand tighten the new filter don;t use a wrench and add the new washer to the sump plug. jobs a good one.

I had a big end failure for no apparant reason, I always used Shell helix ultra 10w40. When I take out the running in oil I,m going to use Mobil 1 motorsport 15w50. Put 5w30 in there and wait for the bearings to fail imo.
In the end i used Magnatex Professional 5w-40 fully synthetic, better for the cold morning we have to come. I cranked the car over for 30 secs before starting, via disconnecting crank sensor. All good! :-D
