Default Who overtook the Pacecar? Calendar this evening

Tonight on Calendar....

Blue new age STI over took a Silver Polo / Passat that is part of a west Yorkshire 'Pace Car' or rolling traffic calming initiative to keep speeds down...

The car was being driven by an elderly Gent (not Police) at an indicated 55 on a lovely, clear open national speed limit stretch... It was being filmed out the back and front windows and the scoob did a nice overtake..

Wasn't too quick or aggressive either.. nothing more than 60-65...

What's the point of driving at 55 on an open troad like that? FFS Indicated 55? That's probably closer to 50.

Probably going to put more people in danger or cause more accidents that it prevents...

I can see the point through 30's, but national speed limits at 50-55?

...to make a 'fast car' overtake it, so all the other 50mph drivers can shake their heads with pompous indignation at the TV...Wouldn't surprise me if the STI overtake was even rigged by them...

Total bull****...

What!! they are using cars to hold up traffic below the speed limit. Any links to news about this?

"How will this help reduce casualties?

By driving within the speed limit you will be performing a mobile traffic calming role, keeping the overall speed of traffic following you at the speed limit. Lower speeds mean that in the event of a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian or cyclist, the severity of any injury sustained will be lessened. Lower vehicle speeds also mean that drivers are more able to stop in emergency situations.
"

Hmmmm... I would expect that (as the paragraph before this advised driving at or below the speed limit) many professionals (traffic/accident) would disagree here - if you have some f'er driving too slow then the actual affect on traffic in general is very likely to be more dangerous.

I'm suprised they don't have some advice stating "If you are driving below the speed limit and a murderous driver overtakes you (which means they are contributing money to terrorists, pedophiles and the drug trade and that they kill kittens) then flash them or put your high beam on continuously"

Humberside did this some time ago, the scheme has long fallen by the wayside. Some nasty people kept reporting the kn*bs and f*cktards displaying the PACE stickers in their rear windows for their manner of driving (most of it downright dangerous) and apparently one of those stickers was almost guaranteed to make you a "target" on certain estates.

Also they dropped it like a hotcake after somebody allegedly wrote to the local council and informed them of the problem that PACE Cars are infringing the common no racing/pacemaking get out on insurance policies and could they confirm that the scheme didn't break that restriction, they did and someones local insurance broker told them in writing that infact should they claim for an accident whilst participating in the scheme that there would be no payout of the claim and that they were infact breaching the terms of their insurance.

Utter bullsh*t...will cause MORE accidents not less..

Just today, driving back from Whitby - tosser in a volvo driving consistently at 40mph on a long clear 60mph road (even slowing up for bends!) - there were people overtaking him IN PAIRS narrowly missing head-on collisions with cars coming the other way...basically this guy was a menace and was even causing people in cars NOT capable of overtaking at speed to do so...MPV's overtaking in 5th gear and taking about 5 mins to get clear - you name any form of bad overtaking and it was happening...even I was reduced to a full on two gear drop and hammer action...

As stated, I have no problems with these in place of Scameras. Right place, right time.

But open carriageway and you're asking for trouble..

Contravenes the Highway Code anyway:-

Lane discipline
238: You should drive in the left-hand lane if the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower moving vehicles it may be safer to remain in the centre or outer lanes until the manoeuvre is completed rather than continually changing lanes. Return to the left-hand lane once you have overtaken all the vehicles or if you are delaying traffic (Read - Subaru Drivers ) behind you. Slow moving or speed restricted vehicles (Read - Anything other than a Subaru ) should always remain in the left-hand lane of the carriageway unless overtaking. You MUST NOT drive on the hard shoulder except in an emergency or if directed to do so by signs.
