Hel,
I called into Wyevale (T5**W) "STi7" if ther other "STi7" **02 PVA at Pontrialis would have been "Sparky Rob" or if "STi8's" on a MY03 plate or a W**AJH one is my Union conveenor and the Othe a Dentist P1 could be one of 3 peeps if gold 18"'s it was the "Spud man".
where I work, at one stage there was 10 Subaru's on the firm's car park STi8, STi7, Black WRX02, green WRX01 wagon, sliver MY98, STi5 type R and 2 legacy's and a 300UK in a carpark next door.

I cant see anthing wrong with this terminology, mine is a STi02Uk bugeyed, and my mates are Blobeye'd MY03Sti's OK later on in the posts reverted to STi7's & 8's but we are just simple country folk here and not very bright LOL
Your going to have problems with them dam Yankee's though . You realise that their models this year are MY05STiUSDM or STi05USDM
Is the only differrence between STi9JDM and STi10JDM is a square plate over the boot lock

The thing that's "wrong" with the STi7/8/etc. thing is that far too many people have got into the habit of applying it incorrectly (yourself and hel included), and it's thus reached a point where two different people can talk about "STi8's" without actually being certain what car each other is referring to.
There are/were even folk on this BBS referring to MY04 cars as STi8's, which goes to show how distorted this thing has become. You wouldn't go round calling an STi6 an STi5, would you, so why do it with the new age cars?
Nothing whatsoever wrong with the MY02/MY03 UK/JDM etc. terminology. In the light of the above it's the only method of description that isn't easily misinterpreted.
Depends which JDM STi you're referring to. There are other detail spec differences apparently, but it wouldn't matter if the bootlock was the single differentiating factor. Fact still remains that MY03 cars are 9's and MY04's 10's.
Aware of this and don't have any problems with this at all. It's yet another reason why trying to lump the US and UK market STi's in with the Jap cars in this 7/8/9 numbering thing doesn't work.
The US market and UK/European market cars are fundamentally different from the JDM cars and are developed along parallel tracks. They really are now different cars that happen to look broadly similar and have the same name on the bootlid
The situation with the US market cars is confusing on the surface but easily explained. The bugeye went on sale later over there than it did elsewhere in the world and to fill the gap, the 2001 model year US market Imprezas still used the classic shape shell. The first bugeyes thus became 2002MY, with the MY changeover about six months out of kilter with the rest of the world. It's for this reason that the US gets its "2005MY" cars in the showrooms before the rest of the world.

Many thanks for that was so much easier with the classic's if it was all STi's were JDM's and a STi6 was a STi6 . The main trouble are dealer's they sell us these cars as STi7's STi8's etc etc and as you see 4 years on and I am still getting it wrong
