Lorry that nearly cost me my life
#1
On the A14 07/11/02 at around 09:00 - it generally helps when driving to check in your mirrors for cars that may be beside you as you decide to change lanes. I generally felt that i was a gonner as I was wedged off of the road abot 3" from the crash barrier and spinning 90 degrees either way from the way I was facing! Luckily I (somehow) managed to control the spin, and managed to get back on the road without:
a) Killing/maiming/injuring myself
b) Killing/maiming/injuring any other road user
c) Damaging any vehicles (incl mine)
Now i must go home to get some new pants on!
Edited to say that indicating helps (which he didnt) although whn you ar next to the trailer it wouldn't make much difference!
Still, i suppose he was safe in the knowledge that he wouldnt have been injured.

You were possibly in his blindspot. On the Association Of British Drivers website one handy hint it gives is not to drive alongside lorries on dual carriageways and motorways as they on't see you!
I was oput in the central reservation years ago by a lorry that pulled out when I was alongside. I braked very hard but he just clipped by front wing, the car being unbalanced from the braking promptly spun into the crash barrier, as I was on the A21 crossing the Leigh reservoir at the time I was glad the barrier held up!

How can you overtake a lorry if you can't drive beside it? It was only doing 56mph I was doing around 70mph and overtaking! I wasn't driving beside it, I was going past him!
