It's time to get a new set of rubber so I thought I may as well try and get some 16's for my MY96.

Don't mess about with 16's, you need 17's.

Yep I know they would be the bees-knees as regards handling and pose value but the ride gets a bit too hard for us old git's

Don't mess around with heavy 17s, go for standard subaru lightweight 16s, keeping your unsprung weight down. If you must have 17s, I would do it AFTER you've upgraded your suspension to Leda or similar.

(Sorry Mike, just standing in for devils advocate )
