I'm hearing different things. Is it a 3Bar 2.5Bar or a 1.7Bar ?

3 bar won't let you have 3 bar, and no car would run 3 bar anyways. I believe its about 1.7bar.

Got one now, and all plumbed in but have sold car now, so will never get the chance to try another map and say 1.3/1.4. The Turbo is only good for 1.5 for anything over 1.5 is OK. So irrelevant if its 1.7 or 2.5.

If you no what I mean.

so then what is the point of having a MAP with different Bar ratings?

An early wrx 2 bar map sensor, only sees an actual 1.1/1.2 bar. Therfore if you start mapping a car beyond this even everything else is good for it, the ECU will basically get it knickers in a twist because it will be restricted by the 1.1/1.2 map sensor. The ECU will be trying to reach a target it can't get to, and will likely hit fuel cut (head on windescreen time).

alright so if you had a 3 Bar then you'd never hit fuel cut? Also would fueling change?

Unless you map on a mappable ECU and all works right!

Even if you exceed the map sensor settings, !

The standard map sensor in a Pre96 Scoob's only run in theory upto 1.2816 bar (apprx 2.3 bar, inc 1 bar atmospheric pressure).
From experience anything above a target setting of approx 1.1bar and fuel cut of 1.2bar starts hitting the limit of the standard map sensor. It can also be quite inconsistent at these levels, with boost fluctuations in the higher gears and intermitent fuel-cut.

Using a Map sensor from the later car allows you to go beyond these regions i.e it is a 3bar map sensor (thats 1 bar atmospheric pressure and 2bar boost pressure).
Therefore if you want to map a Pre96 car to run higher then 1.1/1.2 bar using the stock ECU control and retain fuel cut, you need to use the later sensor.

OH! and you also need to rescale the code in the ECU to use the new sensor too....

OK, so no, can't change the map sensor and gain more boost then with just a MAP sensor change.

Later MAP sensors do provide higher levels of controllable boost. BUT need mapping .. and hence a new ECU or secondary board. The later std MAP sensors can do 1.8 bar, above what most people can use, but need remapping / scaling so they can be used as Scott says above.

If you are not MAP sensor based for air flow ( i.e. not using a Link ECU ) then the MAP signal seems to be not that important ... my boost controller goes well past fuel cut ( I run 24 PSI boost ) whilst the MAP flatlines it's output by 1.2 bar / 17.5 psi ... as my controller also raises / removes fuel cut whilst 2 levels of boost. This was mapped in for my Power FC and I used 18 psi and 24 PSI, both with no knock or weak AFR, ( I do have full decat, fuel pump and regulator, 550 injectors etc. ) and I get 325 lbft torque and 363 bhp at Well Lane, with some slipping on the rollers!

These boost controllers are available now ( see ad in scooby magazine by the importer ) and work very well!

Scott - what wiring mods would be needed for a later MAP sensor to be fitted to a early pre 97 car?

Previous replies were buy a special 3 bar sensor ... but still may need wiring !

Mapping is needed I know!

You can always do what I did, and splice the 3 wires to the existing map sensor and extend the spliced wires to the new 3 bar sensor, grd, power, and signal, can't remember which is which top of my head by will dig them out if you want them. By splicing the wires, you can connect a 3bar, and then plug in either the 3 bar or the 2 bar. If the map for the 3 bar don't work for any reason, you are not knackered, because you can just plug the 2 bar back again - making sure to disconnet the 3 bar.
