Looking For A Scoob STI Classic
Budget £10,000
Hi there I am looking for Subaru Impreza STI version III/IV/V for an everyday car and trackdays. I am also looking to use the car as a project are there any early modifications I should look at doing.
Are there any recommendations as to go for Type RA/RB5 etc or should I stick with a standard STI. Import or UK car not bothered.
Where is the best place to find these cars and what should I look for when viewing them as for common problem areas etc.
Can anyone tell me about servicing and running costs required for these cars.
I am new to the scooby scene and any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
The STi is jap import only, so that keeps things simple.
Running costs are not too bad, as if they are properly maintained very little goes wrong. Jap imports expect to run on 100RON fuel, which you can't get from our pumps, so you'll get friendly with your local Shell garage as Optimax is the fuel to use, along with an octane booster for spirited driving/trackdays. You should look to change the oil every 3000 miles if you are exploring the performance of the car, so factor that in at around £40 if you do the oil change yourself. There are plenty of specialists around the country who will maintain an STi aswell.
In terms of modifications, I personally believe you should leave the engine/exhaust alone, and spend the money on suspension and brakes. These will make the biggest difference on track, not 20 extra bhp. (As will good track instruction, but I don't know how track experienced you are?)
I have an STI v3 Wagon that I have done a few track/airfield days in, it has done ~90k miles and never missed a beat. It has plenty of go and is bog standard mechanically.
It might be up for sale soon - send me an email if you want any more details.
