Common fault on the MY99/00 cars. Mine went twice. The 2nd time was quite embarrassing as I was stuck in traffic and the car decided to start revving up and down (500-4000rpm).
If it is a UK car you can try asking Subaru UK / IM if they will replace it for free. You never know...
