These cars will sit and rot is what will actually happen, my car was head and shoulders above anything I've seen prior and after selling mine and even that was pretty difficult to sell. Its all good and well asking x,y and z price but ultimately the majority of folk simply wont pay them prices, so if you think you're sitting on an investment sad to say you arent!

If your like me and have one tucked away with no intention of doing anything with it for the forseable future the value... as with most things will rise as time passes they'll get even thinner on the ground... part of which we are seeing now.
I don't really look at mine as an investment, but I do think the time will come when it will be proven to have been wiser to let it sit in the garage than sell for peanuts... after all it's not eating any hay.

Yours being so heavily modified is what made it a hard sell, Subaru Imprezas have a narrow market... add big power and loads of non standard parts / engine along with an asking price well above £10k and the market becomes almost miniscule... but as you discovered... there's always one.

Honestly id prefer an 1993 RA over an equivalent year STI as they are a lot rarer. They aren't to every ones taste but there are some who prefer the rally breeding in them and retro looks.
It will be a dry use car for summer and something I can take out for a blast on a sunny day and out of them all the RA seems to be high up the pecking order in terms of fun factor on a B road....im not too concerned with what power it has from the factory as it will be getting mapped for 97 ron anyway so will end up around the 280-300bhp mark on its VF22 and with the short ratio box and 1170kgs it should go nicely.

Anyway my thoughts below
The future of these cars are in the ones in good condition and original (or as near to)
The prices are rising due to there being less in decent condition.
There are already cars that are 25 years old from the manufacture date and I don't see the Americans falling over themselves to buy them, so the USA import rule isn't the reason either.
I'm sure those that have sold their own cars for less money than they could have got today, are the ones moaning about the way current pricing is going. Shame. You shouldn't have sold and it's too late to try talking prices down.
I doubt good cars will be left to rot in garages either. Mine won't be left to go that way.

Certain jap stuff will be favoured by Americans. Talking about this on the type ra forum and I was saying how crazy the prices have went for certain models like early evos, 1,2,3 skylines R32/33 and early civic vti and crx. Prices for good ones of these have all went mad and I think Imprezas are going the same way. But yes it will only apply to cars that are very good ones and close to factory spec.

A properly modified clean car will also command a decent premium(not the usual gypsy build) just in case your discounting them and following the stock form crowd
But if you disagree then the modified guys will make a heck of a lot more cash from breaking them than you buy the clean stock cars, just don't make sense.

No I think your right about sensibly modified cars and I certainly wouldn't be discounting them. I modded my old turbo 2000 "sensibly and tastefully" imo so they would fit the bill too.

I was merely asking a question and your deflecting it away.
I'm just joining in the debate with my own opinions and asking a sensible question.
It does seem that Scoobynet is one of the places where people talk down the values of the marque. Even with the current exchange rates, it appears to me that even the Japanese aren't prepared to give their cars away at auction anymore. You only have to look at the auction house sold prices to see this. Good early cars don't appear as regularly as they did 2 or 3 years ago.

This is true. I bid on a V3 type r last night, grade 4 with 140,000 km. It ended up selling for around 950,000 yen or £11500 delivered to U.K with all fees, duty and VAT paid. So what would a dealer charge once he's put an MOT on it and added his mark up?
It looks like special model Imprezas from Japan are only going one way, as numbers get less prices will just keep going up, supply and demand.
Hopefully I'm sorted now with a V4 STI RA I'll know for sure In the morning

Have to say I agree... and I have been saying it for some considerable time... values for all Jap cars bottomed out around 3/4yrs ago and have been steadily climbing ever since... I don't see them going back down again to those levels.
As always, it's going to be clean standard examples that attract the most interest, along with those that have sensible mods, heavily modded cars will only ever appeal to a select few.
