TBH I'm not sure if they can be tested other that a fault code via the OBD port thingy.

Is the car running poor?

Don't you just unplug it and if the car continues to run, it has learnt to run without it, ie faulty.

thanks for the quick replys guys, the car seems to be running ok its just that i read that if its faulty then this can cause major engine damage which i would like to try and avoid as you can imagine, if i disconnect it with the engine running the car does not cut out, is this bad?

Taylor thats correct, just let the car idle and disconnect the maf connector and it should turn off, this means its working. Though if u have doubts , change it. £100 ish for a maf, £000's for a rebuild

If the car is running fine then I cant see you have a problem, yes faulty mafs can cause problems but not for a short time if you take it easy.
