You need a degreaser.... not acid based, Megs do one, I use PS21 it's citric based but not cheap. I wrap shrink wrap over some of the electrics with tin foil to hold it on, then with a small brush aggitate the de greaser over the areas you need to clean... break the engine bay up in smaller areas and do a part at a time then lightly hose off, I would simple drizzle the water over it not direct it hard !
After that dry with a cloth as much as you can then let it tickover for a while to warm up. Then I use a product called areospace protectant over all the plastics.

Is the top of the engine cover ally ? you could wire wool that the clean it up more.

I'd be tempted to paint the rocker cover with heat proof paint, maybe blue, to liven it up a bit. Also replace the any cruddy looking jubilee clips with some nice shiny stainless ones. Basically give everything a good clean, avoiding using too much water. Clean and wax all the paintwork you can get at and once the plastic parts have been cleaned, maybe use a product like Autoglyms bumper dressing/gel to shine them up a bit.

Like Si said some P21 Autowash brushed in all over then washed off will make the world of difference. Some plastic trim detailer will bring all that plastic back to life and looking as new.
That rocker cover if alloy is crying out for a polish
A few hours on that and it will come up a treat
