Question Repairing and painting fibreglass advice!

With all this snow the splitter has been acting like a plough and must have hit a stone or some ice and it has some spider web like cracks in the surface. As i am saving hard for a track car i have decided to repair it and respray it myself.
I have a reasonable idea of the process i need to follow but i need some clarification from someone in the know.
I was going to give the surface a key, fill the hairline cracks and repair any other worse damage i cannot see with fibreglass. I was then going to use a suitable primer and then spray it black, just not sure weather to go with mat or gloss type finish. Will a gloss finish look OTT and am i on the right path?

Cheers peeps,
Ian

Hi mate, after the experiance i had with a repair'd splitter i would'nt recomend it, but if you are going to paint it i'd go for a satin black finish

best way to stop cracks spreading is to drill a little hole each end of the crack that will stop it going any further

What happened mate?

The damage is minimal to be honest, but wanted to strengthen the weak areas before the damage becomes too serious.

Thanks for all the advice so far too lads

A few weeks after carrying out a repair on my lower lip (it was quite a large repair) i was following another scoob at around 150mph (auto bahn) and when i pulled out to pass i heard and feltsomething go under my car, when we stopped later on i asked the owner of the other scoob if anything had fallen off his car (it was a classic ) but then realised my lower lip had given way causing the following damadge:- Front bumper pulled out from o/s wing, o/s vent in bumper missing, o/s wheel arch liner + clips missing, kink in the o/s wing and about 10mm out of line with the door, minor scuffs under the car, got my new splitter from ht autos its much more flexible

Thats worth keeping in mind then. At the moment though it just seems to be cosmetic, although i havnt taken it off for a good look yet. Now that you have said that, i remember something simular happening to Rob (Pippyrip).

Cheers for the links too John, very helpful

Christ this is a blast from the past!!

I never got around to doing any work on mine in the end. After I looked at it there wasn't any major damage, just cosmetic. Its been on and off the car half a dozen times since then for various reasons and its still on the car now without issue.

That said, if its in half then its fit for only the bin as its far too small to repair to its original strength.

Sorry fella
