Default Gearbox Broken

I had to remove my gearbox on the weekend to try and fix a speedo cable problem. Also the gearbox had suddenly started to make a knocking noise which a friend of mine thought could be the bearings in the front diff.We removed the gearbox in front of the house on Saturday just using a jack and set of axle stands.(Fun) . Anyway to cut a long story short the gearbox has been stripped down and it appears that about 7 teeth have been ripped off 2 of the cogs, Which i think are 3rd and 5th. Does anyone know where i could get new cogs for an RA gearbox. The car is an L reg MY94 WRX RA and i believe these had the shortest ratio's of all the RA's. If i can get hold of the cog's then i am lucky enough to know a man who can rebuild the gearbox for me. I think the ratio's started to get longer on the 95 RA's.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
James

Your having a bad run there James

It may pay you to get in contact with API they seem to have comprehensive stock for gearboxes, they rebuilt Danny's when he broke his.

Also it may pay to talk with Andy as he is on your doorstep.

dare I say hope to see you at the next meet ?

Cheers guy's. I will speak to either paul or david to see if they can help me. I just really want the parts as i have a friend who will rebuild the gearbox for me. I have yet to confirm which gear cogs they are that the teeth have broken off. It might sound daft but it's not that easy to identify which gear is which with the gearbox stripped down.

Tell me about it Si it's seemed to be one thing after another for the past 12 months. After spending a fortune just keeping the car running i am still no where near where i want to be modification wise. Its a good job the car still puts a smile on my face every time i am in it Hopefully the car will make one of the meets in the near future and things will start to come together.

Thanks
James

T5OLF ,Did u go for a taller 5th gear?

No I stayed with the same 5th, not sure if you have noticed but there is a slight drop off in pick up going from 4th to 5th anyway, not much but you can feel/hear it. The jump from 4th to a standard wrx 5th would spoil the box for me.

I don't do motorway driving and the car only gets used on B roads and country lanes so I like the box as it is. I love the gear ratio's, country lanes make for great fun with this box.

As said David or Paul should be able to supply the cogs you need.

I had david rebuild mine as I haven't got a clue when it comes to these sort of things and I really can't be arsed to it in the first place.

Thanks for all your advice guy's. T5OLF, I agree with you mate. The gearbox is fine as it is and to be honest i like running the car on the 1/4 mile strip and i seem to be in 5th gear well before the end of the strip so a taller gear would only slow the car down. The gearbox is ideal as it is for B roads and twisty's and i like the fact it accelerates quite violently through all the gears including 5th. (when its running lol)

Thanks
James

Thanks

Nice one Jon. Hopefully i am off to Newbury tomorrow afternoon to pick up a replacement gearbox. So with a bit of luck the car will be back on the road soon with all it's problems sorted. (Untill next time ) New exedy organic clutch going in at the same time to save removing the gearbox again anytime soon (Touch wood).

Taylor your definately right. I can't put up with this 1 litre fiesta much longer . I am close to getting out to push when climbing hills.

I just got back from Newbury with a new RA gearbox so fingers crossed it won't be long now.
