Shell (Pentwyn) - V-Power Update
All,
I stopped off at the Shell garage in Pentwyn this afternoon to fill up pre-remap on Thursday. While there I took the opportunity to question the staff about when they are planning to start selling the new V-Power petrol instead of Optimax.
The answer.....an emphatic "We aren't planning to start selling it, we'll be continuing to sell Optimax". This was backed up by ALL sales staff behind the counter and an off duty bloke who was in there chatting to one of his mates. I quizzed him further and he's adament they aren't planning to stock it. I then asked whether they knew whether the Shell at McArthur Glen was planning to stock it and they reckon it'll be at least a couple of weeks, (if at all).

as nice as the staff are in there i reckon half of they aren't aware they are currently selling optimax; let alone a fuel that they don't have yet.
i went to fill up in newport today only to find all the pumps empty. in their own words they were "waiting for a delivering of the new v-power stuff - we won't be selling optimax anymore"

scooter - that's pretty much the same line I got from the Shell in Cardiff, they've opted out of V-Power.
I suppose if it ends up with an increase in the price at the pump, the franchise's have to weigh up whether they think they have the market for a 'Performance Fuel'. Optimax is currently 105.9p/l at Pentwyn and I would assume V-Power is likely to be at least 2p/l litre more expensive (or why would Shell bother to manufacture it, if not to increase profit ). That would take it to at least 107.9p/l which people are not going to pay on a regular basis IMHO, especially as the supermarkets have just reduced the prices at their pumps.

Hmmmm tis strange I thought Pentwyn were already sneaking the V-Power stuff in, over the last 4 to 5 weeks I've been getting much lower knock levels (Apexi) when filling up with their.

Right, today I have been told the following:
Franchises can opt out of v-power. Normal shell garages can't.
How to tell the difference between Franchised outlets and others:
Apparenty PIN operated shell garages are Franchises and card swipe garages are Normal shell garages.

E-mail Shell and this was their reply
Dear Chris,
Thank you for taking the time to contact Shell UK.
I can confirm that Shell V-Power unleaded is available nationwide at more than 90% of Shell service stations.
I am pleased to confirm that any Shell site which previously stocked Optimax will now be supplied with VPower.
Many Thanks

*confused*
I just filled up now with v-power (shell oswestry) @101.9p a litre.
I asked the guy behind the counter what octane rating the new fuel is? he replied 98ron as it is the same fuel as optimax!!!
He stated that they have just changed the name due to some legal battle over the name 'optimax' with some optician type firm!

Don't know about the RON but Shell in Queensferry (by the blue bridge) and the Shell at Neston (Hinderton Arms) both have the V-power stuff.
The one in Queensferry is also a franchise but they said they just started getting supplied the new stuff no question on opting out from what I was told there. The woman I spoke to said they just ordered it the same and the tanker just arrives with the new stuff. I didn't ask at the other, I just saw their sign had changed to say V-Power.
To be honest I think my car is running better......
