Default unknown gadget anyone know what this is?

i have this fitted in my car but have no idea what its for. the guy i bought the car off said it was to unjust the boost through each gear but i dont think he really knew what it was for either. the turbo comes in ant between 3 and 3,half thousands reves this seems late to me as the last wrx i had it came in at just over 2. i haven't a clue how to put pic on here so if you dont mind emailing me at welshnurse67@aol.com i,l send a few photos of the gadget

Here you go

My guess is some sort of boost controller, but maybe it's an 'older one' ??

Apexi SAFC, it an air/fuel mixture controller works by altering the signal from the MAF and MAP sensors going to the ecu.

Heres a link for a discription of the new version:

Was going to put my writing in large then cut and paste the discription in smaller writing.

You need some one who can monitor your air/fuel mixture (think they use a wide band lambda) and alter the **** at the same time. Try Andy at ACE motorsport in Newbridge, he probably won't thank me for reccommend him on this one, it'll probably be a pain in the **** to set up right.

I would get it done ASAP, if you have messed your air/fuel mixture up then you could be causing the car to DET, which might f**k your engine.

Don't know the spec of your car, but i would of thought that the reason for fitting one of these is to adjust the fueling to allow the car to run more boost or if it has a non-standard turbo without having the ECU remapped.

Basically it takes the signal from the MAF/MAP sensors and alters them to fool the ECU into putting more/less fuel in, it's just cheaper than fitting a mappable ECU

If your running standard boost and turbo or just a very slightly increased boost level, then personally i'd rip it out.
Best thing to do is take it to ACE and let him have a look over it, he can drive it with some DET CANS and see if there are any signs of DET and either set it properly or remove it.

how do i get hold of this ace chap?
the only mods that i know it has so far is a detcat stupied big loud exhaust and a after maket hks air filter. the car is a 94 wrx, i have noticed that the turbo seems to come in late around 3500,rmp the last car wrx i had was just over 2200,rmp.
and the air flow meter has been changed to, looks like it came from a brakers yard.

forgot to ask as well what does DET mean?

Detenation, basically it's what kills most subaru engines

ACE Motorsport is a rally prep company based in newbridge, there a thread about half way down the page about how good everyone thinks they are. Andy the guy who runs it is an ex Prodive mechanic.

His number is 01495 244555 or 07866 736878, he tends to be quite hard to get hold of by phone (as he's very busy) so best to leave a message if you can't get hold of him and he'll ring u back.

Being a 94 WRX it should have a TD05 16G turbo i think, which should hit around 1 bar of boost by 3000 rpm so it sounds like there maybe somthing a bit wrong

Det or Pinking (there are a few names for it) is whereby the explosion of the fuel in the cylinder is happening at the incorrect time.... (i believe)

It sounds like small stone chippings being dropped onto a tin roof..... (at it's worst)

If you hear this 'Back OFF' the throttle and drive it easy....

Generally it happens at the higher end of the speed throttle end and/or when the engine is under strain

You generally need a trained ear to be able to hear it, or a set of DET cans.

I couldn't hear anything when mine was detting, but Andy could hear without even using DET cans.
