Discs burnt out after 15K
I have an 04 STI. Bought new in March 2004
I recently visited my local dealer to have some new pads fitted to the front as I thought I heard a slight grinding noise. I wasn't sure if it was just a bit of build up on the disk as the car has hardly been used since July, so I thought I'd get it checked out.
I was not happy when I walked away after paying the better part of £900 (after discount)
My front pads were low, my back pads I was informed were crumbling so they were changed also. The front disks were badly worn and had some heat cracks, so they were replaced.
Is this normal on a Brand new car which I have done just short of 15,000 sensible miles in over about 15 months. Does this mean that I can expect this bill every 15,000 miles.
Surely there is something wrong and it should be under warranty.
Can anyone advise or help?

Bought our 03 STi last May and in September we took it to main dealer cos there was a grinding noise - approx 17,000 on the clock. They said the rear discs were pitted so they replaced the rear discs for free and we just had to pay £186 for 2 rear pads. Still wasn't happy with paying that out after only 4 months.

If you have been driving as you say you have i would have a go at getting some money back either via dealer or IM, my 02 STI had pads changed after 24000 fun miles, discs were fine. Ref rear pads, I believe MSP1 didn't change rears till 35k plus. As for £186 for pads, this is taking wee wee. Steer clear of Subaru when it comes to pads and discs, you can get beeter quality for a lot less. As for your warranty, ask yourself this, if my electric window/ gearbox/ engine goes **** up are they going to inspect your brake pads to make sure they are original scooby parts

W**kers!!!
Unless rear pads are significantly dearer than front pads they've been totally out of order. I've just retrieved by service invoice and here's the exact charge for the pads:
p/n: 26296FA170
desc: PAD KIT FRT
qty: 1 (contains 4 pads - 2 pairs)
price: £86.80 (exc VAT)
labour: £54 (80% of 1 hours labour @ £67.50/h - this including fitting DISCS AND PADS)
(and I managed to wangle a 10% discount so only paid £78.12 + VAT for the pads)

oh, don't forget STI's have brembo's, the pads and discs always cost more, that ull be the trade off of stopping quicker than the Subaru ones.
I'd of popped down to Godspeed and had some monsters fitted and you'd of still walked away with a couple hundred quid in your pocket

Pad change
I have just inspected my pads, they need changing within 2 to 3000 miles, on a 02 sti 30000 miles on originals!! had a price from Suburu main dealer £177 + vat, went into motor world today and a compleate set of EBC green stuff all 4 wheels £159 inc vat, there must be some fault on your discs get Subaru to investigate this under warranty.
Best of luck Andy

Yeah, I guess that would make a big difference. Expensive though, I'm off to Godspeed next time too, just wish I'd known about them before I'd had mine done at CVC in June/July.

Would've been funny though
I've actually been to worst main dealers than them to be honest, but I feel a bit aggrieved at my £1600 gearbox rebuild bill.
Plus during my 30k mile service (when they recommended changing my scored discs and worn pads that had both only done 8k miles!), they also pointed out a tiny bulge in the front left tyre. They said it would fail an MOT because of the bulge but I told them not to change the tyre.
3 months later I took it back there for its MOT and it passed with no problems whatsoever.

GOOD NEWS
Thanks for all your comments guys. All noted
My local dealer has now agreed a full refund. Via Subaru
Just waiting for it to clear back into my account and I'll be happy.
I must say though I am concerned about the life span of these disks and pads as I genuinely don't think that I have abused the car.
No Track days, but living in wales there are a lot of hills, stopping & starting.??
I will deffinately be keeping an eye on them from now on.
I don't fancy paying out for the next lot after 15K.
Having recently sold my Ferrari 355 after a few years ownership, the running costs of that are probably working out to be cheaper than the Scooby.
((for the record, the scooby will p*** all over the 355))
I have owned lots of quick cars, but the car to date that I have enjoyed driving most is the Scoob.
